The viewer wrote a complaint against TVP Info. The Media Ethics Council took a firm position

“Polish Television and Polish Radio have lost the character of a public broadcaster since 2016” – with these words the Media Ethics Council responded to one of the complaints received by the institution after the election debate against the TVP Info station. The letter also stated how many similar complaints were received by TVP.

About a month ago, one of the viewers notified the National Broadcasting Council, the Media Ethics Council and the European Broadcasting Union that TVP Info programs “lack information about current events.” The author of the complaint, Mateusz Rędzioch, justified that he was talking about, for example, “the crisis in the generals of the Polish Army.” At the same time, he mentioned that the broadcaster “carried out self-promotion in the form of constant commentary on its own program Debata Wyborcza, which did not meet debate standards.”

The Media Ethics Council has been watching the so-called national media

The author of the complaint quoted by the portal accused TVP of favoring the ruling party in the election campaign. “The program does not ensure pluralism of expression, the programs are commented on one-sidedly, and thus TVP Info actively participates in the election campaign for one of the committees, which contradicts any standards of journalists’ work, democracy and the election campaign” – we read.

In addition, the complaint included allegations that TVP covered minor events, such as “the opening of a police station by a representative of the ruling party.” Mateusz Rędzioch informed, among others: the National Broadcasting Council, the National Media Council and the European Broadcasting Union.

At the moment, all we know is that he received a response from the Media Ethics Council, which agreed with his position. In response to the complaint, REM pointed out that “media analysts pointed to propaganda instead of information in TVP programs.”

We confirm that since 2016, TVP and Polskie Radio have lost the character of a public broadcaster, whose transmission, in accordance with Art. 21.1 of the Broadcasting Act should be characterized by “pluralism, impartiality, balance and independence,” wrote REM member Andrzej Krajewski in response to the complaint.

The journalist also informed that since 2019, the Media Ethics Council has responded more than 20 times to similar notifications from people who accused “TVP and Polish Radio of failing to fulfill the mission of a public broadcaster in specific programs.”
