Monika Strzępka took up the role of director of the Dramatic Theater in Warsaw a year ago. The actions of the new management were met with considerable criticism from actors who accused Strzępka of, among other things, discrimination. It even happened that Aldona Machnowska-Góra, vice-president of Warsaw, informed about a meeting with trade unions to clarify the situation.
Dramatic Theater in Warsaw. The actors and actresses released a statement
In turn, Monika Strzępka, in an interview with Onet, emphasized that the Dramatic Theater needs radical changes. “The previous director left a specific legacy in this theater, not only aesthetic, which I deal with every day. To put it bluntly, we entered a very precisely mined area,” said the director and noted that she would dismiss half of the actors.
A statement regarding the matter appeared on the Internet. This time they were published by the current artistic team of the Dramatic Theater. The actors emphasize that they want to distance themselves from the “wave of hateful comments” and “one-sided narrative” that they noticed in the context of the facility’s operation.
“We are a group of people with different views and ideas, but we are a team and together we are trying to transform our workplace. This process takes time, is complicated and exhausting for all employees. We are undergoing restructuring, which includes layoffs. It is very painful and difficult moment,” we read online. At the same time, the actors emphasize that they will never turn a blind eye to mobbing, but whether any irregularities actually occurred at the Dramatic Theater should be decided by “entities authorized to do so.”
Monika Strzępka caused a storm. Artists comment
The statement was commented by, among others, director and actor Robert Zawadzki. The artist notes that the actors signed in the letter are largely people newly employed by Strzępka. “How weak it is when people who have just come to replace their colleagues who were thrown out and treated in such a shameful way, or those who have managed to avoid being kicked out so far, talk about trying to transform their workplace, about a ‘painful and difficult moment’. “- writes Zawadzki.
The declaration was signed by twenty actors, including Magdalena Czerwińska and Katarzyna Herman. On the website of the Dramatyczny Theater in the “actors” tab we can find 43 names, which means that the voice published online is officially supported by less than half of the artists employed at the institution.
