When Tommy Wiseau had a dream of becoming famous 20 years ago, he probably did not expect that he would achieve such a status. Few films have received a cinematic adaptation telling the story behind the scenes of working on it – and “The Room” received such a laurels. Thanks to “Disaster Artist” (2017) and the role of James Franco, Tommy Wiseau’s work gained a second life. But why was it decided to film it? That’s because “The Room” was so bad it was perfect.

A crystal good, handsome and at the same time funny banker is betrayed by his fiancée and best friend. A cliche, boring script? Well, not this time. It is a multi-level, even elementary testimony of how not to make films. But that’s why it’s so iconic.

“Oh, hi Mark.” The apogee of bad cinema

Although during the screening the viewer is almost constantly scratching his head, wondering about its meaning, it cannot be denied – it is an unusual experience that provides a lot of fun. Holes in the script, terribly bad, almost “wooden” acting and, above all, “golden” dialogues – yes, they are what make the film continue to delight fans of B-class cinema.

Why do the characters suddenly start a pillow fight? And why did probably the most embarrassing sex scene in the history of cinema end up there? Only Tommy Wiseau knows that. But fans of this production loved it precisely for that. “The Room” is terrible, yes. Nevertheless, watching it provides an unbridled amount of satisfaction and joy. It is also living proof that anyone can create films. It’s not just the critics’ opinion that matters – cinephiles’ opinions too.

When it premiered in 2003, “The Room” was shown in only two theaters for just two weeks. Importantly, with a budget of USD 6 million, it earned… PLN 1.9 thousand. USD. It may sound absurd, but for the next five years Wiseau (horror of horrors) spent PLN 5,000 a week on a billboard promoting his work. dollars a week. If that’s not a passion for cinema, what is?

Poland on top. Tomasz Wieczorek or Wieczorkiewicz?

Another interesting fact? Tommy Wiseau’s origins. Or rather…Tomasz Wieczorkiewicz or Wieczorek. Yes, our hero comes from Poland (more specifically from Poznań), although he carefully hid it. Fortunately, the court came to the rescue and, according to the verdict, he could no longer hide his identity. He had to pay an additional PLN 700,000 to his whistleblowers, the creators of the film “The Room Full of Spoons”. dollars in compensation.
