“With a Camera Among Animals” brought them fame, but also controversy. “Viewers’ sympathy is the greatest value”

“With a Camera Among Animals” hit Polish viewers’ screens on January 17, 1971. Since then, for three decades, together with the owners of the Wrocław Zoo, we have been following the fate of its inhabitants. During this time, many myths and stories have arisen around the show. The last episode was broadcast on June 22 2002 on TVP1.

The program enjoyed great popularity, especially in the 1980s, when it even won two Wiktor Awards and two Golden Screens (1986 and 1988). It must be admitted that over 30 years on the big screen is no mean feat. However, Hanna and Antoni Gucwiński managed to do it. The married couple, trained as a zootechnician and a veterinarian, invited viewers to the world of animals that lived in the zoo under their care.

A quick way to the animal world. “Will they cooperate with us?”

The hosts of “With a Camera Among Animals” were able to share knowledge and interesting facts about their “children” in an extremely light and accessible way, including: giraffes, bears, parrots and snakes. Each episode lasted approximately 25 minutes. Such a short airtime was enough to make endless friends with the zoo animals. Especially since they did not always want to cooperate with the married couple on video.

This was the pillar, the greatest value of this program: the animals were untrained. The camera and our commentary followed the animal’s behavior. For 30 years of “With a Camera Among Animals” we followed this. We never forced animals to do anything. The animal did what it wanted, regardless of whether the camera was on or not.

– The Gucwiński family recalled years later in wroclaw.pl.

The end of the program and what happens next. They never abandoned their passion

The Gucwiński couple stopped managing the Wrocław Zoo in 2006. And 4 years earlier, the last episode of their program was broadcast. Leaving the local zoo was associated with accusations of improper care of animals. But even after they left, they did not abandon their previous lives. They continued to care for them, this time in the comfort of their own home (including dogs, pygmy hedgehogs and parrots).

Years later, the Gucwińskis recalled that their greatest success was that, many years after the broadcast of their program, people approached them on the street and simply, in a human way, thanked them for their knowledge and shared moments of joy. Their ministry came to an end in 2021 – Antoni Gucwiński passed away at the age of 89. Now, on November 12 this year. his wife Hanna joined him. She was 92 years old. Let us return to the moments of joy they provided us with the following fragment of their spectacle:
