The Kaczyńskis’ mother resigned from her job so that they could act in the film. On set “they were uncontrollable”

More than 60 years ago, the film adaptation of Kornel Makuszyński’s novel “About Two Men Who Stole the Moon” debuted on cinema screens, starring the brothers Lech and Jaros³aw Kaczyñscy. Working on the set was a challenge not only for the then 12-year-old twins, but also for the entire crew. Why?

On November 12, 1962, Jacek Batory’s film was released in cinemas across Poland. The script was created by the director in cooperation with the author of fairy tales and poems for children, based on the best-selling novel by Konrad Makuszyński from 1928.

Their uncle submitted them to the casting. It was their debut and last role

The main characters of the film are two brothers, Jacek and Placek, from the small village of Zapiecek, around whose adventures the entire plot takes place. The inhabitants do not particularly like them. They are lazy, they do not help their parents with their duties, and they only cause trouble with their numerous pranks. One day they come up with an idea to steal the golden moon and then cash it in. After several failed attempts, they finally achieve their goal. However, the joy does not last long, because the seemingly innocent act causes an avalanche of further problems.

They played the role of film troublemakers. It was both their debut and last adventure with film. They were submitted for auditions by their uncle, Stanisław Miedza-Tomaszewski, the brother-in-law of their mother, Jadwiga, who believed that their characters were a perfect fit for these characters. However, what caught the producers’ attention was not their similarity, but the unusual form of the application. When he saw the advertisement, he tore a piece of paper from his notebook on which he wrote down the brothers’ names, surname and address. – The filmmakers were amused by the form of submission. They decided to find out who the advertised boys were – the Kaczyński mother.

The Kaczyński brothers were untamable. Their mother was watching over them on set

When filming began, the Kaczyński brothers were only 12 years old. For this reason, they were accompanied on the set by their mother, who gave up her job at school for half a year to watch over them, and this, as it quickly turned out, was quite a challenge. Despite their interest in cinematography, the twins’ imaginations turned out to be far from what working on a film was really like. They felt tired of the number of takes and how much time they spent waiting for their turn.

Repeating the shots ten times, when, for example, the donkey didn’t want to throw us off its back. Our day was filled with photos, and in the evening the teachers came so that we wouldn’t lose the school year

– said Lech Kaczyński in the book “About two such… The Alphabet of the Kaczyński Brothers” by Michał Karnowski and Piotr Zaręba.

Some of the scenes were recorded at the “Syrena” Film Studio, where at the same time “The Story of the Yellow Ciżemki” was being shot, with one of the main roles. The actor recalled that the twins were real bullies, they preferred to play mischief rather than perform their duties, and after returning to the hotel where they stayed, they continued their antics to such an extent that the staff had to intervene several times. – They were two devils – he said in an interview for “Duży Format”. – They were an uncontrollable element, an educational problem for everyone, because in order for them to do something on the whistle, they had to be pacified first – with laughter.
