In the past, they were everywhere. Why do we see white dog poop so rarely today?

Have you noticed that you haven’t seen white dog poop for some time? It used to be the norm – today it doesn’t happen at all. And no, unfortunately not because poop is not seen at all. They proudly decorate many lawns, passages and sidewalks. They just look different.

It’s worth starting with the fact that we don’t want to see dog poop at all. When walking your dog, especially in public places, you should carry bags with you. What’s more, it would be good to use them. It’s not pleasant to see the lawn covered in piles, the smell is even less pleasant, and that’s not to mention stepping on it. But back to the topic: have you noticed that dog excrement looks a bit different today than it did twenty years ago?

“Super crazy”

This issue was raised by a tiktoker named haussdrama. Without mincing words, she asked herself and her followers a question that has been bothering many people for some time:

Do you ever wonder why dog shit isn’t white anymore?

No matter how direct her question sounded, it’s hard not to be interested in this topic. Indeed, a dozen or so years ago, when walking on the sidewalk, you could notice dog feces in a color significantly different from the one we see today. The author of the recording decided to look for the answer to this question. Conclusions? “Super crazy,” she said.

It turns out that the dog poop was white because of what was in their diet. Nowadays, books are written about pets’ diets. Owners try to choose appropriate food with a balanced nutritional content and the least amount of preservatives and fillers. Some people prepare raw meals for them based on the BARF diet themselves, and still others invest in dog catering.

Why was dog poop white?

Currently, food available for sale must meet certain standards. Not so long ago, a dozen or so years ago, these standards were completely different. Many dogs were fed meals whose composition left much to be desired. Meat and bone meal was a popular filler. It was so rich in calcium that the dog’s digestive tracts could not process it, so it was excreted in the feces. Initially, they looked normal, but after some time after exposure to the sun, the calcium came to the surface, so the poop turned white.

Moreover, too much of this element in the diet does not have a good effect on the digestive and skeletal systems of pets. Because of this, they may suffer from gastrointestinal problems and bone and tooth diseases. Additionally, calcium interferes with the absorption of other nutrients.

In recent years, manufacturers have stopped adding this type of fillers to dog food. Nowadays, protein and other ingredients that are healthy and natural for dogs’ bodies are more often used. Our pets have definitely benefited from these changes.
