When the film adaptation of Kornel Makuszyński’s novel “Awantura o Basia” was released in 1959, Polish viewers got to know a completely new actress. It was Małgorzata Piekarska, who was then 4 years old. The title character was infectious with her omnipresent optimism and childlike energy. It was not without reason that her talent was visible, despite such a young age, additionally enriched with natural charm.
Following suit, director Maria Kaniewska engaged Piekarska in another film adaptation of Makuszyński’s work, “Satan from the 7th Grade”. The cult title among some readers also ignited the emotions of cinephiles a year later, in 1960. The last time we saw the title character from her acting debut was in the comedy “Code Name Nectar”, filmed in 1963.
A handful of optimism for difficult times. “The film adaptation may not have been made”
As Kaniewska admits, there was a close call for the film adaptation of “Awantura o Basia” to never see the light of day. For those times, the film was too optimistic and did not fit the sad reality prevailing at that time. And this is probably why it was so successful, allowing viewers to leave the depressing framework of everyday life, at least for a moment.
Małgorzata Piekarska was supported on the set by quite an honorable group of actors. Let’s mention, among others: Krystyna Feldman, Jerzy Duszyński and Bogusław Kobiela. The film also delighted foreign critics. He received many awards, including the extremely prestigious Bronze Lion at the Venice festival.
Farewell to cinema. Years later, we know the fate of the actress
However, the actress’s fans, waiting for her next performances on the cinema screen, had to swallow a bitter pill. Piekarska completely disappeared from the screen, and her fate was unknown for many years. Only the director Kaniewska, in an interview a few years ago in the magazine “Kino”, revealed the secret about her life outside the film world.
I was at her wedding. She looked as beautiful as she did when she was four and a half. Now she lives in Australia, she got married for the second time, she has a daughter, apparently even prettier than her. She’s the chief accountant of some huge company and she’s doing great
– revealed Maria Kaniewska in Kino, quoted by Onet.
