At the end of July 2023, 27-year-old Katarzyna Kożuchowska was admitted to the Regional Hospital in Kołobrzeg. The woman experienced bleeding. Doctors decided to perform a cesarean section. The birth in Poland was unplanned because Mrs. Katarzyna and her partner lived in Sweden and that is where their child was to be born.
Right after giving birth, there was no indication that a tragedy would occur – we learn from the reportage. The 27-year-old hugged her newborn son and even took a souvenir photo with him. 24 hours after the boy was born, she was admitted to the intensive care unit. Her condition was described as critical. The woman died after 4 weeks. She was unconscious for the last 28 days of her life.
“She was dying for a month and no one helped her”
The prosecutor’s office initiated an investigation into her death. In an interview with Polsat reporters, the late husband said: Catherine, Mr. Paweł. The man believes that the medics contributed to the death of his wife and did not provide her with appropriate help. He has been trying to establish all the facts in this case for months.
I don’t really know what happened there. I know there was definitely a medical error. She died for a month and no one helped her. And the hospital says they have a shortage of doctors. She suffered for so long and simply died. Healthy woman. I can’t function normally. I swear I won’t forgive you until I find out the truth
– he said.
Hospital spokeswoman: “We care about standards”
Now it turns out that Mrs. Katarzyna’s case was not an isolated one. who have traumatic experiences related to the Kołobrzeg facility. We also learn that the hospital has been receiving complaints about the hospital since 2016 – 149 of them to date. Patrycja Głomska, the spokeswoman of the facility, responds to this. – For us, these are not facts. I have complaints in the form of facts that have been clarified – he claims.
Referring to other women’s experiences, she said that “every single case is dealt with” within the hospital. She explained that this is done through “conversations with staff” and then “review of medical records.” – We still care about standards. We want to improve their quality based on the complaints we receive and give us the opportunity to improve, she assured.
“I won’t be able to have children”
In an interview with “Interwencja”, for example, Mrs. Wioletta, who – as a hospital patient – was fighting for her life for 12 days. In her case, she gave birth 4 days after the due date. – I remember everything until I gave birth (…). They said they had to use forceps. After giving birth. The doctor came (…) and said that they had removed my uterus and that it was a threat to my life. They put me in a coma because I had a hemorrhage. I woke up after 12 days in the ICU, she told journalists. In her opinion, it was the use of forceps that led to the hemorrhage.
The uterus did not shrink, so they removed it. My biggest resentment is that I won’t be able to have children anymore
– she confessed. The woman underwent a total of three serious surgeries. What happened during childbirth? This is not known exactly yet. This is also the subject of proceedings by the prosecutor’s office. The remaining patients never informed law enforcement authorities and suppressed the trauma for years.
“The situation was a risk of suffocation for the child”
An example is another interlocutor of “Interwencja”, Mrs. Natalia. The 29-year-old is now raising a daughter. She believes that the doctors’ actions contributed to her child’s disability.
I went to the hospital as my doctor told me to. He admitted me, but said that my due date was not the same as my due date because my attending doctor had made a mistake. I got back home. I called my doctor and he told me to go back to the hospital immediately. This is the same doctor who didn’t want to see me. She said it was a lack of amniotic fluid and I had two hours to give birth. The situation put the child at risk of suffocation
– she recalled. When her daughter was born, the woman was immediately concerned about certain facts. – It didn’t give me peace of mind that his feet were so strange – she said. It turned out that her child suffered from valgus of the hip joint.
I didn’t know it could be related before, but I found out it could be from the oligohydramnios I had. I just don’t know if I can prove anything to anyone now. This is the worst hospital for giving birth. The worst care
– she emphasized. The program also presents the story of two other patients of the Kołobrzeg hospital, whose bodies had fragments of the placenta left after giving birth. – On Monday, I was admitted to the ward with a 40-degree fever. It turned out that there were remnants of the placenta in the uterus. I underwent curettage, said Mrs. Monika.
