There are no topics that cannot be used to present the opposition in the worst possible light. On November 7, we celebrate a traditional dish that has been an integral part of Sunday dinner in many Polish homes for years. We’re talking about a pork chop, which, as it turns out, can also be used as a tool in a political fight.
Pork Chop Day in “Wiadomości” TVP
The idea to celebrate Pork Chop Day was presented on social media by, among others, Jan Piechociński, who published a humorous entry on Twitter. “Poles, let’s celebrate beyond divisions” – read the entry under the photo of the golden cutlet. The topic was also picked up by “Wiadomości”.
However, instead of material that transcended divisions, we could see another attack on the opposition and a clear suggestion that the views of the PSL party were much closer to those of PiS than the coalition planned after the elections.
“Wiadomości” scares viewers with kale and arugula
The TVP material included, among other things, the suggestion that Pork Chop Day could soon be taken away from Poles, provided that the country manages to “implement the most leftist ideas.” The holiday, according to “Wiadomości”, has a chance to be “replaced with kale or arugula day”. The reportage scared viewers about the protection of animal rights and the Left, which is fighting, among other things, to abolish cage farming. The entire fragment was clearly intended to show that this type of views are not consistent with the values presented by the Polish People’s Party, with which the Left will have to cooperate in the new reality.
The pork chop was only an excuse to present how the Left “hits” Polish farmers. During the pre-election conference, MP Anna Maria Żukowska spoke in detail about the party’s actual demands regarding animal rights that can currently be implemented in detail. The New Left proposed a pension for uniformed animals, a ban on cage breeding of poultry, a ban on breeding animals for fur, an end to the sale of live fish and the use of animals in circuses.
