Rafał Tomański joined the Trójka radio team in 2022. The journalist, Japanese teacher and author of several books about the Land of the Rising Sun, after over a year of work in the medium, received a phone call informing him about the end of cooperation. In a recent interview for Onet, Tomański suggested that the decision to dismiss him (this is the word he used) was related to the way he conducted journalistic programs.
Rafał Tomański disappears from Radio Three. “He wasn’t fired because he wasn’t an employee.”
Before the journalist heard that “the formula of his program was exhausted” and that his cooperation with the station was over, he was removed from political programs. “The management made me understand that I was asking uncomfortable questions and it was received badly,” says Tomański. However, his program “World to Third” also had many controversial topics. In the last edition he hosted, he discussed corruption in Ukraine and the migration problem in Sweden with his guests. In both cases, Tomański was told to “finish the uncomfortable topic”, which he informed his listeners on air.
We asked Monika Kuś, spokeswoman for Polish Radio, to comment on the matter. “Rafał Tomański was not fired because he was not an employee, but a collaborator of Program Three under a standard cooperation agreement, which gave the possibility of using his services in accordance with the needs of the antenna. The formula of this cooperation has been exhausted,” explains the station’s representative.
Polish Radio denies that Tomański’s broadcast influenced his dismissal: It is abuse
Kuś also commented on the content of the e-mail, which Tomański quoted in an interview with Onet. The message from the president of Polish Radio, Agnieszka Kamińska, allegedly contained detailed instructions on how to conduct subsequent programs on the radio and a note that “several issues” in connection with Tomański’s work “raised serious doubts” in the author of the correspondence. Kamińska’s guidelines mainly concerned talks about the upcoming referendum. “The broadcast, which as an example (and the correspondence related to it) – Mr. Tomański cites, was carried out in August, the contract was terminated by the Director of Program 3 a few months later – hence, suggesting that it had an impact on the decision of the Management of Trójka is an absolute abuse.” – explains Monika Kuś. It is worth noting, however, that in an interview with Onet, Tomański cited situations that occurred during the program that preceded the termination of the contract by only a few days.
“It is also worth emphasizing that the President of the Management Board is also the Editor-in-Chief of Polish Radio and all its antennas. As in the case of Editors-in-Chief of all other media (regardless of whether private or public), he co-creates editorial content and is responsible for the published content. In connection with The Editor-in-Chief of Polish Radio, within the scope of his competences, has the right to express any suggestions, while maintaining journalistic freedom and independence,” declares the spokeswoman for Polish Radio, referring to the critical e-mail by Agnieszka Kamińska.
