The action of the series “Kamerdyner” takes place in the years 1900-1945. It is a story about the Prussian von Krauss family and the Kashubians’ fight for autonomy, personified by activist Bazyli Miotke (Janusz Gajos). – Through the characters and their tangled fates, the film develops Kashubian themes and brings closer the tragic fate of this national group, absent from Polish history and film. The film takes us through the first half of the 20th century, not skipping the most dramatic events in the history of Kashubia, such as the genocide in the Piaśnica forests at the beginning of World War II. In “The Butler” an epic thread of love and nationality intertwines, until the inevitable end, which is marked by 1945 and the entry of the Red Army into Kashubia – said director Filip Bajon.

Miotke’s character was inspired by the “Kashubian king”, i.e. Antoni Abraham. The title character is his butler, Mateusz Kroll (played by Sebastian Fabijański). An important thread of the film and the series is the story of his love, written over many years, i.e. the feelings that united the illegitimate son of Count von Krauss and the maid and Prussian heiress Marita, who died in childbirth.

Shooting for the film began in 2015 and was released in theaters in September 2018. A few days before the premiere, a book based on the script was published. Its authors are Mirosław Piepka, Michał Pruski, Marek Klat and Paweł Kraśnicki. About the film five years ago:
Filip Bajon shows these 40 years of history without any powder and does not give easy answers to difficult historical questions. None of the sides of this story remain crystal clear, but it is all the more worth seeing with your own eyes how the Polish-Kashubian-German cauldron boiled in those times.
The film opened the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia in 2018 and won several awards. Bajon himself received the Silver Lion, Adam Woronowicz was awarded for the leading male role (he played Hermann von Krauss), and Antoni Łazarkiewicz for the music (also for “Werewolf”). Ewa Drobiec and Mira Wojtczak also received statuettes for make-up. “The Butler” also won Eagles for set design (Paweł Jarzębski, Zbigniew Dalecki) and costumes (Ewa Krauze, Izabela Balińska, Małgorzata Braszka and Małgorzata Gwiazdecka).
How many episodes does the series “The Butler” have?
The “Kamerdyner” series is a longer story compared to the 2.5-hour movie. How many episodes will TVP show? Five, and each of them is 40-42 minutes. In addition to Gajos, Fabijański and Woronowicz, the series stars, among others: Marianna Zydek, Anna Radwan, Borys Szyc, Łukasz Simlat, Daniel Olbrychski, Kamilla Baar-Kochańska, Marcel Sabat, Marcin Kwaśny, Diana Zamojska and Sławomir Orzechowski.
– Stories about recent Polish history are particularly close to me. ”The Butler” is one such story. I wanted to show a piece of history that seems forgotten today. The unique landscape of Kashubia and the tragic fate of its inhabitants deserve to be preserved in human memory, said Filip Bajon before the cinema premiere. The director added:
The cauldron of nationalities that we had in these lands in the first half of the 20th century brought unexpected dramas that found their tragic end in the murder of Kashubians in the forests of Piaśnica. It was the last moment to make this film, in a moment everything will fall apart, it will disappear from people’s memory. And the camera can still capture it all. Just a little while longer.
Viewers could already see the first episode of “Kamerdyner” (catch up on VOD). The next ones will be broadcast on Sundays at 20:20. Bajon’s costume series replaced the very popular series “Dewajtis” in the TVP1 schedule. According to the Wirtualne Media website, the seven-episode adaptation of Maria Rodziewiczówna’s social novels was watched by an average of 2.47 million viewers, 790,000 more people than last year’s “War Girls 5”. “.
