Some people certainly remember when the standard for broadcasting digital terrestrial television in Poland began to change in March 2022. Due to the introduction of the new technology, many viewers had to buy compatible receivers to still have access to popular channels. At that time, the changes did not only cover, but soon this issue will change significantly.
Poles will lose access to TVP channels. The station must implement a new broadcasting standard
When most television stations changed the broadcasting standard, the president of the Office of Electronic Communications, at the request of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, granted consent to broadcast MUX-3, which owns the main channels, in the old standard until the end of 2023. As part of this terrestrial multiplex, viewers have access to, among others: about TVP1, TVP2, TVP3, TVP Info, TVP Sport or TVP Historia.
Initially, the migration to DVB-T2 with the HEVC codec, the aim of which is to improve the quality of services provided, was to take place at the end of December, but plans have changed and this process will be accelerated. According to reports, the operation is officially scheduled to be completed by the end of November 2023. What does this mean for TV viewers?
When will the change process start? The schedule has not been officially set
The change in the broadcasting standard will be particularly burdensome for owners of older generation receivers that do not support the DVB-T2 HEVC technology. This means that both TV sets and decoders will stop receiving channels belonging to the MUX-3 multiplex, so up to half a million homes will lose access to them. Wirtualne Media informs that the entire process will take about a week and will be carried out gradually throughout Poland in order to quickly locate the fault and make necessary improvements in the event of any complications. – The exact date/schedule will depend on the result of working technical arrangements between the broadcaster and the technical operator of the broadcasting infrastructure – the Communications Office of the Ministry of Digitization said in a statement to the portal. According to the plan, it is to be preceded by information and educational campaigns, but detailed information on this subject is not yet known.
