Irena Santor watched the death of the “queen of Polish jazz”. Later she was blamed for the accident

Almost everyone knew and sang the songs of the queen of Polish jazz. Ludmiła Jakubczak was only 22 years old when she died in a car accident. Her manager, and privately her husband, Jerzy Abratowski, was blamed for this tragic event, and the alleged motive was an affair with Irena Santor. What would be the truth?

was born in 1939 in Tokyo, where her parents emigrated. She spent her childhood in the then Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and moved to Poland in the 1950s. She knew that she wanted to connect her future with art. So she studied ballet, and in the meantime she took singing lessons from the famous opera singer, Wanda Wermińska.

The renowned composer was her mentor. They fell madly in love with each other

The breakthrough in her career aspirations came in 1958. Then she took part in a competition organized by Polish Radio, gaining her first listeners and, as it later turned out, also love. Her performance caught the attention of a composer valued in the industry, Jerzy Abratowski, who could boast of collaborating with many famous artists, including: with , Irena Santor or . Enchanted by her voice, he offered to take her under his wing. She agreed without a second thought. She was incredibly impressed by the artist, who was a decade older, and she stole his heart.

In the end, it turned out that they had much more in common than a common passion and work. Eventually, the couple got married. – Lusia was actually an almost ready-made personality, an artistic individual, but she also had a bit of luck. At the right moment, she met the right man who lifted her up, guided her, confirmed that she had talent, and taught her. It was Jerzy Abratowski, who loved her terribly – Halina Kunicka. Happiness in her private life went hand in hand with the development of Jakubczak’s career, which quickly gained momentum after performing in the stage program of the Song Theater in Warsaw. Performing the song “Alabama”, she not only delighted the listeners, but also gained critical acclaim. She started giving regular concerts and collaborating with other artists.

Her tragic death shocked all of Poland. Fans accused Abratowski and Santor of murder

Everything changed in the fall of 1961. Jakubczak was invited to participate in the program “Music light, easy and pleasant”, in which she performed the song “Tango of Jealousy”. The recordings took place in a studio located in Łódź, where she went on November 4 with her husband. After finishing work on the set, the couple went to dinner at the Grand Hotel in the company of Lucjan Kydryński and . Despite unfavorable weather conditions, they intended to return to the capital on the same day, which Kydryński strongly advised them against. Despite the warnings, they did not intend to change their plans and, accompanied by Santor, set off. When they were almost at their destination, a tragic accident occurred. The car skidded and hit a tree. Abratowski and Santor did not suffer any injuries, unlike Jakubczak, who died in the ambulance taking her to the hospital due to serious skull injuries.

A wave of criticism fell on the survivors of the accident. The composer had to face particular lynching and misunderstanding, as even at his wife’s funeral he was accused of her murder. Jakubczak’s fans claimed that he had an affair with Santor. Ultimately, Abramowski emigrated to the United States, where he tried to rebuild his life. However, he still faced a huge sense of guilt for what had happened. His fate ended equally tragically. In 1989, he witnessed a bank robbery in Los Angeles. He died as a result of a gunshot.
