It was not Stanis³aw Tym who was supposed to play the main role in “Rejs”. The creators’ plans were thwarted by tragedy

Stanis³aw Tym played the role of a fake kaowiec in the film “Rejs”. Today, fans of Polish comedy cannot imagine anyone else in this role, but the director initially cast a well-known actor at the time. The artist died in an accident a year before the premiere of the cult film.

“Cruise” is one of the most popular comedies in the history of Polish cinema. Marek Piwowski’s black-and-white painting debuted in 1970, and since then it has managed to delight several generations. The fan club of “Rejs” and the script written by the director and Janusz Głowacki in cooperation with Andrzej Barszczyński and Jerzy Karaszkiewicz is constantly growing.

It wasn’t Stanisław Tym who was supposed to play in “Rejs”. The director saw another actor in the role

Where does the admiration for the production come from? “Firstly, a criticism of all enslavement, so veiled that it has the value of a satirical generalization. Secondly, the impression of spontaneity of events taking place in front of the camera, which is difficult to achieve in cinema. Finally, the participation of unique personalities of Polish cinema: Jan Himilsbach, Zdzisław Maklakiewicz and Stanisław Tym “Besides – as fans say – this film is impossible to describe, you must watch it – every face, every grimace, situation by situation, frame by frame,” we read in the description of the film on filmpolski.pl. The portal also reminds that the production was hailed as the best Polish film of all time in the “Polityka” plebiscite.

The plot of the production is not complicated. The film tells the story of a boat cruise on the Vistula River. A stowaway appears on board and is mistaken for a cultural and educational instructor. The man organizes meetings, selects the cruise board and entertains the tour participants. The fake coffee worker was played by Stanisław Tym, but he was not the director’s first choice.

The fake coffee worker from “Rejs” was supposed to be played by Kobiela. The tragedy thwarted the creators’ plans

Bogumił Kobiela was supposed to play the iconic role in the film. The actor gained popularity by playing in films by Andrzej Munk and Andrzej Wajda. His most famous role was the role of Jan Piszczyk in the film “Zezowate szczöcie”. In 1969, just a year before the premiere of “Rejs”, the actor died in a car accident.

Kobiela’s car, in which he was traveling with his wife and two hitchhikers, skidded and then collided head-on with a Jelcz bus. Nothing happened to the passengers who traveled with Kobiela and his wife. The actor’s beloved was only slightly injured. The artist assured the paramedics who arrived at the scene that he felt fine. However, he soon lost consciousness. As a result of a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding, he died eight days after the accident.

The role of the kayak in the cruise was then entrusted to Stanisław Tym. It is also worth noting that a large percentage of people appearing in “Rejs” were amateurs – reports the Wprost portal. The creators really wanted naturalists to appear on the screen.
