When November 1 comes, the graves of our loved ones are filled with candles and flowers. Families meet at the cemetery and remember the dead together. There are tears and warm hugs. On this day, Poles choose elegant clothes in dark colors. Although it’s hard to imagine, in some countries not only cemetery visits are completely different, but also the graves themselves.
Romania. Merry Cemetery
The Merry Cemetery is located in the Romanian town of Sapanta. It is characterized by unique, colorful tombstones. They are carved with scenes from the deceased’s life and information about what he liked to do, drink, eat, what his hobbies were and where he worked.
There are also funny pictures referring to the cause of death and poems written in the first person. This is how Romanians perceive things: ironically, with distance and a sense of humor. All graves are in a similar style and are definitely different from those we have in Poland.
Bolivia. La Paz Main Cemetery
In Bolivia, funerals and visits to the cemetery are associated with fun, colors and food. The dead are buried in niches arranged on two levels. There are colorful ladders nearby that you can climb if you want to get to the high grave. Burial places resemble doll houses: there are toys, decorations and even bottles of alcohol. Visitors to graves dance, eat and even light bonfires. Bolivians do not associate death negatively, they treat it as another stage of life.
Russia. Dargavs Necropolis
The Dargavs necropolis in Russia, more precisely in North Ossetia, is called the city of the dead. At first glance, it looks like a small settlement with charming houses. In fact, these are graves that take the form of small buildings.
The taller the building, the more remains there are inside. People buried here were buried in boat-like structures. It was believed that the deceased had to cross the river to get to heaven. There are wells next to the tombstones. After the funeral, a coin was always thrown into them. If it hit the stone inside, it meant that the deceased went to heaven.
