Burning candles and placing flowers is not only a symbol of memory of the deceased. Fire is also a symbol of eternal life, but also a signpost for the soul of the deceased. It was believed that cemeteries were visited by the spirits of the dead, especially during this period, i.e. on November 1 and All Souls’ Day. For this reason, the rule was strictly enforced not to take anything home from the cemetery under any circumstances. This applied to both candles and candles, as well as flowers. It was believed that such behavior brings bad luck and even attracts evil spirits and damned souls to the household.
What cannot be taken from the cemetery? Not only candles and bouquets
According to superstition, anything brought to the cemetery should remain there. It already belongs to the dead. Fresh flowers and wreaths should therefore remain on the grave until they wither, and artificial plants, like candles, should be placed in appropriate containers. Therefore, it is better not to take the decorations home. Interestingly, it was also believed that this superstition even applied to plants growing in cemeteries. Therefore, it was forbidden to collect flowers, or even chestnuts falling from trees.
However, the worst crime that could be committed in a cemetery was theft. It was believed that in this way the peace of the deceased was disturbed. Stealing candles or wreaths, just like taking them home, meant bad luck, including serious illnesses. Some people suspected that the superstition about taking things from cemeteries was intended to scare away cemetery hyenas that rob graves.
