Adam Kay was a doctor, today he is a stan and writer. His first book “It’s Gonna Hurt” is a bestseller that delighted filmmakers. Kay describes her career as an obstetrician and gynecologist in an emotional, often humorous way and why she is no longer a doctor. And it’s not funny here – he says, among others: attention to the overwork of health care workers and the underfunding of the British system. The diary from 2004-2010 inspired creators from the BBC, who in 2022 presented the world with a series starring Ben Wishaw – darker than the original.

The production won, among others, four BAFTA statuettes – for best actor, selection of the cast for a scripted program, editing in the plot and for script in a drama series – for Adam Kay himself. I must admit that I’ve read his book a few times now, I had a great time at his performance in Poland, and “Christmas Duty” – a similar collection of anecdotes and reflections from my time working in a hospital – is an unusual but great read for December. In “Nielekarz” he described the time when he left his profession, and this book – although still full of distance, irony and humor – also touches on an important and difficult topic from his life (I will not spoil it).
Kay is also the author of several books aimed at young readers. So far, “Your Anatomy” and “Very Incredible Medicine” have been published (100,000 copies were sold in Poland), which my 10-year-old son devoured, laughing, and then sharing a lot of knowledge about biology, which of them flows. In October 2023, “Mighty Brains” premiered. This time, the author decided to take a closer look at the stories of billions of people who have inhabited the Earth since prehistoric times and chose ten people who changed the world. As the publisher notes, “as it turned out, they had one thing in common. They all loved picking their noses.”
Because in the case of Kaya’s books, the graphic layer is as important as the text for young readers, we publish the fragment in the form of a gallery. Photos from the chapter about Ada Lovelace can be found in the gallery. Katarzyna Dudzik is responsible for the translation.
The heroes of “Mighty Brains” are Albert Einstein, Ada Lovelace, Thomas Edison, Greta Thunberg, Maria Telkes, Katherine Johnson, Tim Berners-Lee, Amelia Earhart, Janaki Ammal and Christian Bernard. Not all names may be familiar to readers. Kay argues that “once upon a time, they too, just like you do now, sat on the couch, scratching their butts and wondering what time dinner would be.” And then they came to something.
