The heir to the throne was not allowed to marry his beloved. In revenge, he killed his pregnant sister and the royal family

In 2001, a bloody massacre occurred in the Nepalese royal family. Prince Dipendra, the heir to the throne beloved by his subjects, took a gun and shot nine members of the royal family, and then took his own life.

In the Narayanhita royal palace in Kathmandu, during a family meeting on June 1, 2001, members of the royal family were murdered by the heir to the throne. Prince Dipendra did not spare even his pregnant sister.

He fell in love with the wrong woman. The queen threatened to take away the throne

Birendra enjoyed enormous respect and support from his subjects. He had three children, Dipendra, Shruti and Nirajan. According to the rules, Dipendra was to be the heir to the throne. So why did the future king decide to take the lives of family members and then kill himself? The official reason was the king’s lack of consent to marry his beloved, but many conspiracy theories arose around the crime. Dipendra fell in love with a woman from the Devyani Rana family, but the prince’s mother did not agree to the wedding and found him another candidate, threatening that if he did not marry the indicated woman, she would take the throne from him and his younger brother would become king.

On June 1, family members gathered for a meeting. On that day, Prince Dipendra was drunk and under the influence of other intoxicating substances. The servants took him to the bedroom, from where he called his beloved and wished her a peaceful night. He put on his uniform, took his rifle and at 8:45 p.m. he went down to the room where the guests were gathered. First he shot at King Birendra, then he left the room, but after a while he came back and started shooting at everyone gathered. “I thought someone was joking with those arrows.” There were screams and I heard someone say: His Majesty has been shot – Dr. Rajiv Shani, son-in-law of the monarch’s youngest brother. Dipendra took the lives of nine members of the royal family and later took his own life. For three days (according to the constitution) he was the king of Nepal. Doctors kept him in a coma, but he died.
