is a story about how 45-year-old Olga (), a judge from a charming seaside town, unexpectedly for herself and the entire surroundings, enters into a fiery romance with a very attractive Italian, 15 years her junior, Maks, played by the actor known from the “365 Days” trilogy. ” and the role of Taco Simone Susinna. Even though they are both fascinated by each other, it is not easy. The problem here is not only the age difference. What is problematic is how and why they met, what their relatives and friends expect from them, professional issues and Olga’s daughter’s reaction to this relationship. Let us add that the entire film is also a fantastic tourist showcase for Hel, where most of the photos were taken. Yes, the title of the production is not accidental, precisely because of this location.
“Heaven in Hell” is a new global hit on Netflix. In Poland we won’t watch it on the platform
“Heaven in Hell” from October 16 to 22, viewers from various countries watched a total of 5.2 million hours, which, with a screening time of exactly two hours, translates into 2.6 million views. This put the film in seventh place on the Global Top 10 list. Let us remind you that, meanwhile, the Polish “Quack” has been in the same ranking for a month now and is currently ranked fifth among the most popular non-English-language film productions.
The film with Magdalena Boczarska also entered the Top 10 in 11 countries: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, the Republic of Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. The popularity of the production is even more impressive because Netflix does not have full rights to international distribution of “Heaven in Hell” via streaming. Therefore, Polish users cannot watch the film on this platform – in our country, the rights to the title are held by Amazon Prime Video, which has been making it available since May.
/ Netflix Global Top 10
Let us remind you that “Heaven in Hell” appeared in Polish cinemas on February 10, 2023, and in the first week after the premiere, tickets were bought by over 220,000 viewers. During its theatrical distribution, the title ultimately attracted approximately 430,000 people. The production also enjoyed great interest on the Amazon Prime Video platform, as it remained on the list of the most popular titles for many weeks.
The creators of the highly controversial erotic trilogy based on Blanka LipiÅ„ska’s prose, i.e. “365 days”, are responsible for creating “Heaven in Hell”. It’s safe to say that the film with Boczarska is an attempt to atone for those films, because the production is not just a music video montage of nice and aesthetic intimate shots. The filmmakers consulted the script with psychologists and wrote the dialogues until they sounded natural enough, and the plot itself touches on topics such as mourning, trauma, mother-child relationships, perception of middle-aged women and what is appropriate for them and what is not. All this is intended to encourage viewers to deeper reflection or some discussion.
Nobody expected this from an erotic film from the creators of “365 Dni”, but according to Karolina Korwin-Piotrowska, for example, it made the film “just a boring erotic film”, but it is rather a matter of personal perception. Considering who created the project, you might as well be pleasantly surprised by what happens on the screen and that the main character does not engage in violent relationships. Maybe it’s worth thinking about the film as a less annoying psychological drama with erotic elements, so it doesn’t force revealed truths down the viewers’ throats.
It is also worth recalling that director Tomasz Mandes and the production team convinced Magdalena Boczarska that if she did not play the main role, the film would not be made at all. Boczarska appreciated how the team consciously approached the project, and in the script she found threads that, in her opinion, were worth the effort and made her take the risk. The actress has been emphatically emphasizing for years that she does not undress in front of the camera just for the sake of undressing, and that erotic scenes must have some scripted justification and be emotional. And there is no shortage of them in this production. The episode of Janusz Chabior, who plays the main character’s caring friend, is also particularly charming. It’s nice to see him in a different look than usual.
Magdalena Boczarska admitted in an interview with Gazeta.pl that she was very surprised by all this and did not expect that this role would “break her down, tear her apart like therapy.” “There are many things we don’t think about every day – or in other words, we don’t want to think about many things, even though we know they are happening. The passing of time, messy relationships, the past, the age difference. The whole movie reminded me of how old I am, how I feel about myself. The camera specifically looked for my wrinkles, because this is one of the main plots – the love between an extremely handsome 29-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, attractive but much older, unsure of her physicality, full of doubts whether such a relationship can survive,” she said.
She also praised her on-screen partner, Simon Susinna, for his endearing openness to learning and his acting potential. – We met much earlier so that we could get used to each other a little, talk about the script, but also get to know each other better privately. Because it’s a very “private” film, with a lot of intimacy with each other. And I’m not just talking about close scenes – the director and cinematographer also participate in them. I mean more of a kind of honest, emotional story about two people who fall in love. Fortunately, Simo and I liked each other almost from the first sight, which certainly helped us build our film relationship – Boczarska explained to us.
– We had to guide each other through this film story with my professional experience and his desire to build a credible character, with limited acting experience. It was a very interesting process. Together with Simo and the director, we worked for a long time on the scenes, the script, and talked about the psychology of the characters. He was open to comments and suggestions, but you have to admit that he has a lot of talent and potential – she explained and added that Susinna is a “very modest guy”, which, considering his physicality (he previously worked as a model), is “an unexpected combination for many” .
