A great career that ended with a change of industry, three marriages ending in divorce and an illness from which she almost died. It sounds like a movie script, but in a nutshell this is what Ewa Lemańska’s life was like. The star abandoned acting and then went abroad, where she lives to this day. What was the fate of Polish viewers’ favorite?
Fame without a guarantee of success
Ewa Lemańska started her acting career right after finishing her studies at the Łódź Film School. She made her debut on the stage of the Polish Theater. Hieronim Konieczka in Bydgoszcz, later she also performed at the New Theater and Stara Prochownia. She appeared on television for the first time, playing the role of Jaga in the series “Doktor Ewa”. Then she appeared in the feature film “How Far From Here, How Close”. Thanks to this, she was cast in the series “Janosik”, where she played alongside Marek Perepczka.
The actors played the roles of lovers and the chemistry between them was palpable. Fans even speculated that Perepeczko and Lemańska were having an affair, but both of them strongly denied these rumors. “He was my husband’s friend, he defended me against other men’s ideas. It was a decent friendship,” said the actress many years later in “Pytanie na śnidanie”.
“Janosik” was supposed to be a springboard to nationwide (and maybe even worldwide) fame for the young actress, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. Lemańska received roles in subsequent productions such as “Azyl” and “Home”, but she did not hide the fact that they were not the peak of her dreams. She wanted something more, but she couldn’t get it. “There was no proposal that I really understood and wanted to play,” said the disappointed actress.
Looking for happiness
Lemańska had to face not only professional problems, but also an impending divorce from her first husband. The reason for the couple’s breakup was quite surprising. “We were a very happy marriage for about two years. But in the end it turned out that he was gay,” said the actress in an interview for “Super Express”.
In the 1980s, she went to the United States, where she started working as a model. She walked on catwalks in Milan, Paris, New York and London. She did not return to acting because she did not know English.
Even though she had already had a failed marriage, Lemańska decided to open herself up to love again. She married Olgierd Roycewicz, with whom she has two sons: Alex and Brian. Their relationship also did not stand the test of time. After 14 years, the couple broke up, but Lemańska did not intend to give up. She fell in love for the third time, this time her chosen one was James Rooney.
In the late 1990s, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The actress thought that the disease would end in her death. “I was afraid. I cried. I screamed. I thought I was dying… I decided to have a double mastectomy,” she said. Lemańska inevitably became interested in medicine, which became so fascinating for her that soon afterwards she obtained the qualifications to practice as a medical assistant.
However, breast cancer was not the last disease that Lemańska had to face. Shortly thereafter, doctors diagnosed her with a brain tumor. She underwent surgery, but not the last one. She also had to have her left toe amputated due to melanoma.
