Freezing is an excellent way to store food. However, it sometimes happens that we trust our freezer too much, taking out the deepest nooks and crannies of meat that we don’t even remember much about. And this may end badly.

A freezer is a must-have appliance in most homes. If we do not have a separate device, it is certainly part of our refrigerator. It’s hard to imagine functioning in the kitchen without it. Even if we don’t love cooking, it is useful for storing ice cream or ice for drinks. Many people passionately freeze meat, but in this case it is necessary to be careful.

It would seem that the freezer hibernates the meat in exactly the condition in which we put it there. However, make no mistake, home freezers do not have the temperature of a centuries-old glacier, but only about -18 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is difficult to expect that the food we put in it will retain its properties for decades.

Much depends on what kind of meat we put in the freezer and what condition it is in. The main thing is to keep it fresh. The worst thing we can do for our stomachs and general health is to freeze meat that has been several days old but we haven’t managed to eat it. Freezing does not kill bacteria, it only puts them to sleep. Frostbite will make them work again. And poisoning from stale meat is not the most pleasant experience.

How to freeze meat?

Here are some rules in a nutshell. It is worth following them to avoid unpleasant surprises.

  • We only freeze fresh meat,
  • do not freeze in the original packaging from the supermarket – put in airtight bags,
  • we remove excess air from the bags – we will avoid, among other things, the so-called ,
  • we describe the bags: type of meat and date of freezing (after a month we really won’t remember what’s in it),
  • We portion the meat depending on planned use.

It is worth remembering that the larger the pieces we freeze, the longer we can store them. However, we do not always want to use the entire kilogram or two at once. Refreezing leftover meat is the second greatest sin we can commit against our health. Therefore, sometimes it is better to freeze smaller portions and remember to eat them before the appropriate time.

How long can you freeze meat?

Appropriate, or what? You should pay special attention to the ground meat. Its broken structure makes it more susceptible to spoilage – yes, even in the freezer. It is assumed that minced meat can be frozen for a maximum of 2 months. It’s really not much time, which is why it’s so important to properly label the bags. As for cut meat, beef can be kept in the freezer for up to 8 months, pork for up to 6 months, and poultry for up to 3 months.

How to defrost meat?

We often do it at the last minute and throw them in the microwave for the defrost program. A better option is to leave it on the kitchen counter for a few hours (unless it’s hot). It is best and healthiest to defrost meat slowly in the refrigerator. But you need to remember this several hours before preparing food.
