The “Expendables” series is one of Jason Statham’s most popular. He almost lost his life while shooting stunt scenes for the third part of the film. The actor and the truck he was driving rolled into the sea. A seemingly irresponsible decision saved him.

In 2010, they made their debut as a director. The story of mercenaries whose mission is to overthrow the dictator of a South American country, with a star cast in the main roles, attracted real crowds to cinemas. The production had three sequels, which premiered in 2012, 2014 and 2023, but they were not as spectacular a success as the original, and were even closest to failure.

“The Expendables 3”. There was an accident on set. Jason Statham took part in it

It was already said that the series was in decline during the premiere of the second part, but “The Expendables 3” was the first clear proof of this. It was during this production that he came close to a real tragedy. The staggering budget of $90 million gave the creators the opportunity to implement many potentially absurd ideas. The photos were taken, among others, in Bulgaria, close to the Black Sea. As befits, there were many demanding scenes in which help was often used. However, Statham was not in favor of such a solution and in most cases he took the risk himself. His stubbornness almost resulted in the loss of his health and, in the worst case, even his life. What happened on set?

The actor fell into the sea with his car. He remained sober-minded

Shooting difficult scenes requires appropriate preparation and special precautions from the film crew. However, we know that life can be unpredictable and not everything can be planned or predicted. Statham learned this the hard way when preparing to shoot using a car, specifically a truck. He must have been driving at speed with the intention of stopping right next to the seashore. These shots were practiced several times, each time increasing the speed. Initially, everything went well, but just before the recordings, the actor decided to make one more attempt to be sure. No one expected what might happen. – I hit two cameramen, I thought I killed them. It was a split second. Then I drove 9 meters over the edge of the concrete pier and rolled towards the Black Sea – actor on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.

Panic broke out on the set. The crew members did not know what to do to help the actor, no one was prepared for such a turn of events. Statham, however, kept his cool. – The water simply threw me back and I had the impression that I was sinking quickly, that I was going straight to the bottom – he recalled the first moments after the incident. What saved him was that he didn’t wear a seat belt when getting into the car. Thanks to this, he got out of the vehicle on his own, and his excellent swimming skills (he even took part in Olympic competitions in the past) allowed him to easily swim to the shore. When he emerged from the water, everyone was shocked and relieved. – We were on the surface and he was stuck in the car. We started to really panic. Everyone was screaming, the car was sinking, and suddenly he just emerged from the water – said Terry Crews, from Hale Caesar. “Jason is a really tough guy,” he said. During these chilling moments, Stallone stood on the shore and documented everything on his phone. – I was looking around, where is Sly? And he was standing on the shore, recording it on his iPhone, and he said, “Jason, do you need a towel?” – he recalled with a laugh.
