Millions were waiting for this return. Will the new Crazy Frog live up to expectations?

An animal loved by millennials who longingly remember the times when ringtone download services dominated, has recently caused a stir on the web. Rumors of Crazy Frog’s return attracted millions of views and comments on YouTube: “Where are you?”, “Come back!” Coupled with the newly discovered fandom among the TikToka generation, Crazy Frog is riding a wave of nostalgia.

Crazy Frog’s risky return with the song “Tricky”

This time the blue amphibian slides the rocket into the reworked RUN-DMC classic, “Tricky”. For reasons not fully explained, this track has been combined with motifs from the tictock hit “M to the B”, recorded a few years ago by the aspiring British rapper Millie B. The lyrics to the hit RUN-DMC are raped by unidentified men, and Frog sings from time to time phrases taken straight from “Axel F”. With undisguised regret, I must admit that for a great comeback, there is not much Crazy Frog in Crazy Frog.

Crazy Frog was born on the verge of a bold digital revolution. Artificial intelligence, streaming, blockchain, and cryptocurrencies were beyond the reach of a poorly defined digital future when Wolfgang Boss along with the VooDoo Music production team and animator Erik Wernquist of Kaktus Films created the most unlikely pop star.

In 2005, Crazy Frog overthrew the industry’s long-established old guard. Five hits later, after reaching number 1 in over 30 countries, becoming the best-selling single of 2005 with over a million albums sold and over six billion views on YouTube, the frog remains a cultural phenomenon. It has grown in importance, dominated the ringtone format, and stays alive thanks to TikTok and YouTube, generating over a million views every day.

In early 2021, Crazy Frog was roused from his ten-year hibernation – the collective amnesia of millennials – and reborn into the arms of the next generation of TikTok. Last spring, TikTokers such as Kimberly Loaiza (55.2 million followers) and Karla Bustillos (20 million followers) choreographed the song, bringing the frog back into favor. Frog is said to be planning a new album, along with regular singles, music videos, a live performance and even a TV series. Is the world ready for this?
