Clergy often remind us that every faithful of the Catholic Church should go to confession, i.e. the sacrament of penance, at least once a year. However, we rarely talk about the cases in which we may not receive absolution.
You may not get absolution for this
For what sins can we not receive absolution? It turns out that actually for all of them. It all depends on whether a person meets the five conditions for a good confession. We are talking about examination of conscience, regret for sins, a strong resolution to improve, confession of sins and satisfaction to God and neighbor. However, there are also a few offenses for which we will certainly not receive absolution. This list includes, among others:
- Insulting consecrated figures (including hermits, virgins and consecrated widows);
- direct violation of the secrecy of confession;
- attempting to ordain a woman.
What sins does a Catholic not have to confess?
It is also worth mentioning that a Catholic’s confession should take into account serious sins. All others, i.e. the so-called venial (light) sins are forgiven to the faithful in a collective act of penance. It takes place at the beginning of each holy mass. Therefore, we do not have to mention every offense to the priest in the confessional. Light sins include, for example, forgetting to pray, gossiping, or laziness.
