Burt Young was a versatile actor who initially did not see his future in film. He started as a professional boxer. His co-starring role in “Rocky” was a breakthrough for him, but he accepted it by accident. He didn’t audition – it was Stallone who noticed him and ordered his agent to arrange for Young to star alongside him. This is how the former boxer became Paulie, Rocky’s best friend. He was the one who let Rocky practice on pieces of meat, and he was also the brother of the boxer’s beloved. The role later earned him an Oscar nomination and a permanent place in the series – they appeared together in every part of the film.
But it wasn’t only in the “Rocky” series that we could see Burt Young. The actor appeared in dozens of productions, including several episodes of “M*A*S*H”, “Once Upon a Time in America”, “Chinatown” and many others. Towards the end of his life, he also engaged in art, although not in film or television. He had been painting for years, but it was only after retirement that he began to show his paintings to a wider audience.
