The Ecuadorian documentary short film “Maura” was awarded as Best Ibero-American documentary during the eighteenth edition of the renowned Shorts México film festival, Production company Filmarte Ecuador reported this on Wednesday.

This short film also received recognition as Best Ecuadorian Short Documentary Film at the International Festival of Cinema From Guayaquilwith which he earned the Silver Iguana.

The piece portrays Maura Alejandro Malave, reciter of amorphinos, traditional verses full of humor and poetry, that leaves an indelible impression on the audience of every performance where it was presented, said Filmarte Ecuador, producer of the piece. The work is a window into his world, a testament to his tireless dedication to preserving this unique and valuable art form.

In just seventeen minutes it presents the life of Maura, 84 years old, last guardian of a tradition that is about to disappear. The documentary, directed by Gabriel Páez and produced by Isabel Rodas, received the support of the National Institute of Cultural Heritage (INPC).

The technical team behind the production of “Maura” consists of Braulio González in sound design and Diego Del Corral in editing and coloring; Carolina Rodas in communications and Victoria Castro as community manager.

The original music was composed by Mauricio Proaño and the musical mixing and mastering was performed by Equilibrio Records and Fabián Mendoza.

“Maura” was also presented at the Vancouver Latino Film Festival in Canada, the New York Latino Film Festival in the United States and the EDOC International Documentary Film Festival, where public voting awarded it first place in Quito.

Precisely in the Ecuadorian capital, it will have its last presentation this coming Sunday within the programming of the International Film Festival, before participating in the Kunturñawi Ecuadorian Film Festival in the Andean city of Riobamba on November 13. (JO)
