It will take place in different artistic settings in the capital of Azuaya until February 22, 2022.
BASIN. Today is the great day of art in the city. After a year of postponement due to the pandemic, tonight the fifteenth edition of the Cuenca International Biennial opens. The concept chosen by the curatorship was the “Biocene, changing green for blue”, as a kind of evocation, respect and conservation of water.
The Cuenca Biennial this year it will have the participation of 34 artists. According to its director, Katia Cazar, what has been sought since the inauguration in 1986 to the present is to support the creative creation of contemporary art, especially in times of pandemic, when “art has withstood very hard times”, such as the current one , when the world goes through the coronavirus pandemic.
Regarding the concept, Cazar related that it was developed by Blanca de la Torre, Spanish curator, who analyzed that for a long time the world lived from the perspective of the Anthropocene, that is to say, that the human being was in the highest hierarchy of nature and dominated it; But after the great ecological years and the unexpected arrival of COVID 19, it was necessary to consider the biocene, which is nothing more than the “horizontal coexistence of human beings with their environment.”
With this view, Blanca de la Torre chose works that reflect on how to protect the environment, be more ecological and sustainable, represented in elements such as air, water, seeds and earth. This, linked to contemporary art, will include various languages: drawing, installations, plastic, performance, artistic objects, among others, that are directly linked to the history of visual art, which is constantly evolving and changing as an organic process of the human being.
Also thinking about the local economic recovery, some of the 34 selected artists will not only participate, but also They will also produce their works with the support of local artisans from various branches, such as wood, metalworking and others..
After the presentation of the Biennial, to be held at the City Museum, the ten venues that host the works of the artists chosen for the event will open simultaneously, which will be available until February 28, 2022.
Artists from the United States, Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Spain and Honduras are already in Cuenca to occupy the cultural spaces, which on this occasion will be the following: the Old Central School, the Museum of Modern Art, the Casa de la Bienal, the Casa de la Lira, the Hall of the People, contemporary IN ART, the Sucre Theater, the Proceso Room and the Remigio Crespo Museum.
Due to biosafety issues, there will be no parallel meetings, such as talks or workshops. The artists will return to their countries on Sunday (I)
