On Tuesday, October 17, the National Electoral Commission announced the final results of the parliamentary elections. A record number of Poles went to the polls, the turnout was over 74 percent. The Law and Justice Party received 35.38 percent. votes, Civic Coalition – 30.70 percent, Third Road – 14.40 percent, Left – 8.61 percent, and Confederation 7.16 percent. After converting votes into seats, it turns out that PiS has no chance of forming a majority government. Moreover, even in the option of an alliance with the Confederation, the opposition won the majority in the elections.
The election results mean big changes also in the functioning of public media. More questions arise about the future fate of journalists who have so far been the faces of government propaganda in “Wiadomości”. We asked for your opinion on the future of characters such as Danuta Holecka media expert, specialist in the rhetoric of journalism and author of analyzes of propaganda mechanisms in “Wiadomości”, doctor Krzysztof Grzegorzewski from the University of Lodz.
What will happen to Danuta Holecka after the elections? “TVP stars will have to disappear from public television”
“I am rather cautious when it comes to personnel policy, but Mrs. Holecka has become a symbol of this propaganda system. A person who is irrevocably and invariably associated with this propaganda,” the expert notes. The journalist started her career at Telewizja Polska in 1993, which means that she worked in public media when different political options ruled in Poland. Grzegorzewski agrees, but emphasizes that she had not been exposed so much by TVP before. “She was not considered the star and face of this television before,” our interlocutor notes.
“I believe that when we are dealing with an obvious symbol of the system, it needs to be changed. These are not credible people in the eyes of viewers,” explains the media expert. Grzegorzewski emphasizes that anyone who turns on “Wiadomości” and sees Danuta Holecka in it will have clear associations with her work ethic. Changing the attitude towards the opposition may cause too much dissonance for the recipients. “People who are on a pedestal on TVP today will most likely have to disappear,” he adds.
“Holecka leads the way in vulgar propaganda”
Grzegorzewski explains that news program hosts have a lot of responsibility. “The person who runs the news program is inextricably associated with it and takes responsibility for everything that happens in it. He endorses the daily with his face, name, behavior, voice – everything,” he says. This is why, according to our interlocutor, TVP stars have no future in their current positions. “No team has ever discredited itself in such a terrible way before. These people need to be thrown out because they are extremely unreliable,” he adds.
“Mrs. Holecka is a leader in crude propaganda and fully affirms what she does, which is also indicated by her non-verbal message and the rhetoric she uses,” emphasizes Grzegorzewski and refers to her analyzes of manipulation in “Wiadomości” on the website of the Journalists’ Society.
What future does our interlocutor predict for Danuta Holecka? He suspects the need to change his job and lists many options. “Ms. Holecka may find a place on the wPolityce.pl portal, on Republika Television, but it will be tight there and there will be little money, on online TV stations such as wReal24, and in Gazeta Polska. In the media unrelated to PiS, she is probably offside,” she emphasizes .
Grzegorzewski claims that Krzysztof Ziemiec is a much more interesting case to analyze. “I’m curious what the new authorities will do with Ziemiec. He wasn’t that aggressive. He stuck more to “Teleekspress”, which in terms of genre is a softer program than “Wiadomości”,” says the media expert. Moreover, his program on RMF FM had a positive impact on the journalist’s image.
