The media made a lot of noise about the events that took place in the parish of St. Wojciech in Lewków (Greater Poland Voivodeship). Local residents claim that the priest demanded PLN 80 from each child for the sacrament of confirmation.
“Demands payment in the amount of PLN 80”
The case was first reported by the website infostrow.pl. – The priest demands payment of PLN 80 for each child for confirmation. Otherwise, you will be blacklisted and will not be allowed to receive the sacrament. There are 113 children, which times 80 PLN gives over 9,000 PLN – the outraged parishioners wrote in a letter.
Parents were also outraged by the fact that a list with the names and surnames of all candidates for confirmation appeared on the parish website. Interestingly, children who have paid are listed in red, while those who have not yet transferred money are listed in black. After the matter was publicized, this list was already removed from the website.
Priest: When I proposed this solution, no one objected
Journalists from the infostrow.pl portal asked the main interested party for a comment. The parish priest denied demanding such payment. – PLN 80 is intended for the costs of cleaning and decorating the church for this ceremony and for the gift of the altar from the confirmed youth, i.e. a new Marian chasuble for the parish. When I proposed such a solution, no one objected, and at the last meeting I emphasized that if someone could not afford such a sacrifice, there was no obligation to do so, commented the priest. He also added that the list published on the parish website was for informational purposes only.
