Robert Gulaczyk was born in 1983 and graduated from the Puppetry Department of the State Higher School of Theater Arts in Krakow, branch in Wrocław. Immediately after graduation, he joined the Kruczkowski Lubuski Theater in Zielona Góra. Then he performed at the Modrzejewska Theater in Legnica, where he has been working for over 10 years. During his stage career, he created almost 60 theater roles in performances by respected artists.
He began his adventure with the camera with episodic roles in Polish series. He played in “The World According to the Kiepskis” and “First Love”. Then he joined the cast of television shows such as “Orchestra” and “III Furies”. In 2018, he played the role of Paweł Piotrowski in the crime series “Znaki”. He also played in “Autsajder” by Adam Sikora and “Interior” by Marek Lechki. In 2022, the actor made his debut in the Marvel series. Gulaczyk voiced Donny Blaze in the first season of “Patron She-Hulk.”
You can also find information online that the actor can play the Didgeridoo, an Australian Aborigines wind instrument, and also walk on stilts. A breakthrough moment in the artist’s career was a phone call from the creators of “Loving Vincent”. The role of an outstanding painter led him to play bigger roles outside the theater. “Privately, looking at Van Gogh gave me a huge dose of self-confidence,” reveals the artist in an interview with Justyna Bryczkowska from Gazeta.pl.
“Can’t I have some easy scenes to do?”
On the website lovingvincent.com we can read that Gulaczyk received a phone call offering him the role of Vincent Van Gogh, because he is very similar to the painter. On the same day, he had to go to an audition for the main role in an innovative film. Supposedly, the actor hadn’t spoken English since graduating from high school, so he was a bit stunned when they immediately started dressing him up and putting makeup on him. The film “Loving Vincent” was the first production of Dorota Kobiela Welchman and Hugh Welchman made using the painting animation technique. The film was nominated for an Oscar for best animated feature film, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA award. The creators’ second film starring Gulaczyk has just hit cinemas.
On October 13, the film “”” made its debut in Poland, under the patronage of Gazeta.pl. The production has a chance to be nominated for an Oscar. Robert Gulaczyk plays one of the main roles on screen – Antek Boryna. The actor admitted that working on both sets is not much different, but Vincent Van Gogh is a completely different character from Boryna. “Vincent was also called a madman, but he was a very introverted and closed character. Antek is explosive, energetic, impulsive and this is the opposite pole,” says Gulaczyk.
The role of Antek Boryna cost the actor a lot of preparation. “The director and the producer told me a year ago, when they decided that I would get the role, that I had to pack a little,” says the actor in an interview with Gazeta.pl. Gulaczyk admitted that he went to the gym for half a year and exercised very intensively to get closer to the vision the creators had. The last 2.5 months before the shooting, the actor exercised four times a week. In addition, Gulaczyk had to learn to dance. Together with Kamila Urzędowska, who plays Jagna in “Ch³opy”, they received lessons from specialists.
The role in “Chłopy” was quite a challenge for Gulaczyk, not only physically. “Can’t I have some easy scenes to do?” – the actor asked himself every day when he came to the set. Arguments, fights and fights are an inherent part of the character he had to play. However, the most difficult scene for Gulaczyk was the rape and breakup scene with Jagna.
Gulaczyk about Reymont’s “Peasants”: It’s a fantastic novel, you just have to get into this world
The actor emphasizes that he is guided by intuition in his work. He doesn’t want to be inspired by other actors who have already played the roles that this time falls to him. He admits that before filming “Peasants” began, he did not read Jan Rybkowski’s 1972 series. “I tried to avoid comparisons. First of all, I read Reymont’s book very carefully,” explains the actor. “Antek is a full-blooded and very colorful character, so it’s a real pleasure to be able to play such a role” – he added in an interview with Justyna Bryczkowska from Gazeta.pl.
Robert Gulaczyk admitted that he is one of the people who did not read “Peasants” in his school days. “It is a great misfortune of this book that the memory of these several-page descriptions of nature remains in the minds of young people. I read this book before work and it turned out to be a fantastic novel. You just have to immerse yourself in this world,” says the actor. He also emphasizes that the characters and problems in “Chłopy”, although set in a different reality than the current one, are still very universal, which is why the film has a chance to reach foreign audiences as well. As we know from global reviews, he has already succeeded.
