“Who are you?” the question is what the enemies of Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) have been made since 2014, when the first episode of The equalizerwith the mysterious protagonist already retired, away from violent scenarios, but with his keen intelligence and espionage and defense skills intact.
So Richard Wenk’s script decided not to tell McCall’s origin story (leaving only brief clues for the audience), but to emphasize his righteous nature and his tendency to resolve matters peacefully until those involved leave him no choice.
This week, fans of Washington, now 68, can see him back on the big screen in the final part of the action and suspense saga which this time brings a touch of nostalgia with the reunion between Denzel and Dakota Fanning, who appeared together in the 2004 hit man on fire, where he was the little actress’s bodyguard.
In The equalizer 3in cinemas from Thursday 12 October Fanning becomes the ally of McCall’s new, self-imposed mission when members of the Camorra extort (“vaccinate”) the residents and businesses of the small town in Italy where he has settled.
