As we learn from the website of the Polish Language Council, a few months ago the head of the Civil Registry Office in Września asked whether the name Neron was ridiculing. Probably some parents wanted to give it to their child earlier. The question was answered on behalf of the Polish Language Council by Professor Stanisław Dubisz.
They chose the name “degenerate and coward” for their son
It turns out that the name Nero is not ridiculing. However, it can be discouraging. – The most famous bearer of this name, Roman Emperor Nero (Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus Nero), reigning in the years 54–68 AD, was presented in European literature and art as a prototype of a cowardly tyrant and degenerate on the throne and a persecutor of Christians, which is largely consistent with historical facts – we read on the RJP website.
In addition, bad associations may be raised by the fact that the term “Nero” also functions in folk culture as a dog’s name. – And it is often a dangerous dog that attacks people and, often, is specially trained for these purposes – we learn from the article.
When can an official refuse to agree to giving a name?
According to the rules in force in our country, the name cannot contain spelling errors or characters that do not appear in Polish. It should also be written according to the rules of modern Polish. Moreover, it is supposed to clearly indicate the child’s gender (today there are exceptions to this). Moreover, according to the rules, the child’s name should not have negative connotations. Moreover, it cannot be offensive or ridiculing.
