In Poland, Michał Kwieciñski’s film is the sixth most frequently watched Polish film this year. Soon, the TVP hit starring Eryk Kulm Junior will be available on Netflix globally. Is the production likely to appeal to foreign audiences?

On March 3, 2023, the film “Filip” with Eryk Kulm Junior in the title role debuted in Polish cinemas. The production is based on Leopold Tyrmand’s novel of the same title and tells the story of a boy of Jewish origin who loses his loved ones at the hands of the Nazis. The hero escapes from Poland to Frankfurt, where he must hide his true identity. Philip manages to build a comfortable life in the heart of Nazi Germany and escape from the hands of death every day. A young man works as a waiter, surrounds himself with luxury, beautiful women and friends from all over Europe. However, nothing lasts forever and soon the war once again deprives the hero of the false sense of security and happiness for which he has worked so hard.

Michał Kwieciński’s film received good reviews from critics and had a great opening weekend. The cinemas were visited by over 50,000 people right after the production’s premiere. In total, the film with Eryk Kulm was watched by 261,000 people in cinema halls – this is the sixth result in 2023 among Polish films.

In May, “Filip” was available for streaming. The film appeared on TVP VOD, and three months later the picture could also be viewed via the platform. Since August, the picture has been available on the popular website for viewers only from our country. This is about to change.

Will “Filip” also become a hit abroad? It will be available on Netflix not only for Poles

According to the Wirtualne Media portal, the TVP press office informed that “Filip” will soon be distributed globally on Netflix. Sales of the film are divided into regions, so the production will appear in different regions in stages. In turn, the portal’s source informed the editorial office that “Filip” has been included in the Netflix catalog since August 2023 also in many international markets. In fact, however, the production will soon reach customers in other countries.

Netflix made a risky decision this year to combat account sharing. Additional users of the platform must pay additionally to use the website’s services. The move turned out to be profitable. In the second quarter of 2023, the global number of Netflix subscribers increased by 5.89 million to 238.39 million, and revenues increased by 2.7 percent year-on-year to $8.19 billion.
