Corpse embalming, also known as preservation, is a procedure that involves stopping the decomposition of the deceased’s body and preparing it for death. First of all, it is supposed to restore its natural appearance, hide traces of disease, and disinfect it. It is performed mainly for hygienic and aesthetic reasons. During the procedure, which usually lasts up to 2 hours, the embalmer connects himself to the veins and arteries of the deceased to exchange his blood for another formaldehyde-based chemical. This action makes it decompose much slower.
