The final episode of the previous series of “Loki” left us with a handful of questions not only about the further fate of the heroes we know, but also about the entire world and even the multiverse that grows in subsequent adaptations of iconic Marvel comics. What happened to Ravonna Renslayer? Why doesn’t Mobius remember who Loki is? What are the consequences of Sylvie killing the One Who Left Behind? What does the infinite branching of the Sacred Timeline mean for the order of the multiverse?
Loki 2. Review of the second season of the Marvel series with Tom Hiddleston
The second season of the series begins at exactly the same critical moment where the previous series left us. We go with Loki again to the TVA headquarters. We are lost, confused and worried just like the title character. Together with him, we get to know the new reality, we look for clues that will help us find answers to all the questions in our heads.
There is no room for warm-up in “Loki 2”. The action (although different from what we are accustomed to in superhero cinema) moves like the title character, who has to face a surprising turn of events in the first minutes of the series. Following his subsequent movements, we have the impression that one solved problem generates five more. The tension doesn’t drop, it just releases slightly when humor creeps onto the screen.
Although “sneaks” isn’t the right word. In this case, an allegory would be more appropriate in which a broad-shouldered, two-meter-tall humor breaks down the door with a strong kick, spits on the floor and asks “did you miss me?” I do. Because the jokes in “Loki 2” are fresh, often surprising and really spot on. And they perfectly fit not only the title character, but also her relationship with the rest of the characters. The second season of “Loki” does what “Thor: Love and Thunder” couldn’t do. The jokes here do not confuse or spoil the drama, but are an important element of the script, they actually spill out from the screen.
Fresh humor, chills, big heart and even more chills!
With the second season of “Loki”, we gained an absolute gem – a character played by Ke Huy Quan (“Everywhere at Once”, “The Goonies”). The way the wonderfully carefree, stoic handyman contrasts with the charismatic, yet emotionally tortured Loki has inexhaustible layers of comedic potential. However, it is the title character who comes out ahead again and focuses our attention. Loki is by far the best written and conducted character in the MCU. The God of Mischief has had the longest, most interesting and bumpy road of all the heroes we know. We saw him in extreme situations, and his unconventional character was completed by a visit to TVA. Here, Loki is stripped of his power, but not his character, and the second season will clearly remind us of this. Get ready for the chills that made you love Marvel.
Tom Hiddleston is phenomenal. We’ve known for years that this is one of THOSE spot-on castings. However, in the second season of “Loki” there are moments in which Tom seems to say “Did you think you knew this character? Hold my cup.” I don’t think an actor has ever evoked such strong emotions in me with such sparse means before. Big wow and again – long-awaited chills!
It is also worth noting that “Loki 2” sounds and looks great. Although the series is full of humor, it has retained its dark atmosphere, which only shines with magical colors here and there. Once again, we can admire the outdated design of devices and objects, the use of which is far from the possibilities offered by modern technology. Another cleverly used contrast.
Time travel is also an ideal excuse for scenographic displays. In the first episodes, we drop into a beautifully recreated restaurant under the golden arches from the 1980s. However, when we go to the premiere of a horror movie (or, if you prefer, a gothic thriller) starring one of the series’ characters, we can admire not only the great costumes of the guests, but also a poster inspired by the style to those created in the 1970s. And the trailer reveals that there will be more such styles!
The only thing that is flawed in “Loki” already in the first two episodes is a simple, painfully predictable twist. Just as unconvincing as the antagonist, who has nothing behind her except stubbornness and absolute denial of the reality that is crashing down on her head. However, this is not a shortcoming that cannot be repaired with subsequent episodes. After all, they are only a prelude to the coming of the mighty Kang the Conqueror.
Marvel’s latest series exploits have greatly disappointed even the biggest fans of the universe. “Loki” reminds us with unobtrusive lightness why we love the House of Ideas, why we forgive it so much and want to return to it. There is a big heart, fresh humor, a good script, great dialogues, excellent acting and techniques, and above all, characters that you want to look at and root for.
