Mascara is one of the most popular makeup products. For many years, women have been confirming that they do not leave home without defined eyes. How does the famous “spitter” that revolutionized the makeup of many ladies work? We also have an alternative option to highlight the eye frame.

Mascara is a cosmetic product used to darken, thicken or define eyelashes. The word itself comes from an Italian word meaning “black paint” or “stain”. It is usually made from a mixture of waxes, oils, pigments and water. It is applied to the eyelashes with a brush or wand.

The history of mascara. Women’s makeup in the Polish People’s Republic included the famous “spit” that emphasized the look

In ancient Rome, long, thick and curled eyelashes were a sought-after beauty feature. Women used, among others: kohl to darken the hair. In the Middle Ages, when the forehead was considered the most desirable feature of a woman’s face, women often removed most or all of their eyelashes. The first mascara was developed by Eugène Rimmel in 1860. It consisted mainly of coal dust and Vaseline, so it quickly smudged and made the eye area dirty. In 1917, solid mascara was created. Mabel Williams created a formula with Vaseline and oils for shine. The package contained a gel that had to be gently moistened with saliva and then spread the mascara over the eyelashes. In the 1970s and 1980s, the famous “spittoy” was a basic accessory in the beauticians of many elegant women. Examples were presented on TikTok by Weronika Bakacz.

Stone mascara. A cosmetic hit as an element of everyday makeup for women in the Polish People’s Republic

Stone mascara, especially popular during the Polish People’s Republic, was housed in a small box. It was a multi-tasking product. It was therefore used both for painting eyelashes, lines on the eyelids and for emphasizing eyebrows. Its use consisted of dipping it in water or using e.g. saliva, and then spreading the product using the attached brush. The formula was not waterproof, so rainy days were a curse for many women. Fortunately, we can achieve expressive eyelashes using natural and home solutions. It is about darkening by nutrition. There are several ingredients that can be applied to your eyelashes to give them the desired shade. It is:

  • castor oil,
  • oak or walnut extract,
  • rosemary rinse,
  • compress of brewed black tea.

Regardless of what we are working with, we apply it with a clean eyelash or eyebrow brush. It is best to apply at night, on the entire length of the eyelashes and along their line, and wash off the rest of the product in the morning. It is worth using them regularly, and after a week you can enjoy the first effects.
