How to light a fire safely? Remember these 7 rules
Lighting a fire in the garden is a seemingly simple proposition, but to make the entire process safe for you, your neighbors and the ecosystem, it is worth following a few rules that will minimize the risk. First of all, start by choosing and preparing a suitable place away from trees. Cover the fuel with stones and keep enough water ready to extinguish it. Avoid lighting a fire on a windy day or on extremely hot days when everything around you is drying out. Remember that the entire process should be supervised by at least one sober person, and also never leave the fireplace to itself, even if there is a little fire smoldering in it. Wait until it fades out completely.
What to light on a fire? Better not throw leaves into it
While you can organize a bonfire for recreational purposes without any major problems, which we like to do, especially in the summer, burning garbage in it is illegal and may result in a fine. If you just want to bake something or have a nice time, use only properly prepared wood with a humidity of 20-30 percent as fuel. This will prevent it from emitting too much smoke. Definitely give up green waste, which produces a lot of it. All the more so because, according to the law, such an action may result in a fine of PLN 500.
Are you planning a bonfire? Check where you can’t light it
As we can read in the Minister of Interior and Administration regarding fire protection, the issue of a place for a bonfire is also regulated by law. You can’t light it:
- in a place where flammable materials may ignite,
- less than 100 m from the forest border,
- at a distance of less than 10 m from the location of flammable agricultural products and threshing floors,
- at a distance of less than 4 m from the border of the neighbor’s plot. The same applies to the storage of flammable materials, including: branches, brushwood and other plant remains.
Apart from the above, You cannot light a bonfire even if the smoke that accompanies it disturbs your neighbors. Moreover, you must make sure that it does not get onto the road, as it will limit the visibility of drivers moving on it, which may result in an accident.
