Dennis Nilsen is a Scottish serial killer and necrophile who murdered at least 12 young men and boys between 1978 and 1983. He was sentenced to life in prison for luring victims into his home with the promise of help and support, then strangling them and sometimes even drowning them.
Dennis Nilsen. Who was the murderer whose story was chilling?
Nilsen had a habit of hiding the bodies of his victims under the floor or in the furniture. After each murder, he bathed his victim, dressed him and kept him for some time. He also sometimes performed autopsies and burned the remains of the bodies in a bonfire or flushed them down the toilet.
It was because of the way the remains were disposed of that Nilsen was tracked down. An employee of the Dyno-Rod water and sewage company operating in the UK received numerous complaints about the sewage system damaged by Des and the huge stench that came from his apartment. Michael Cattran went to the scene to investigate. He opened the drain cover located near the murderer’s house. He then discovered that the drain was filled with goo and the remains of small bones of unknown origin. The case was immediately reported to the police.
“Des.” HBO Max serial killer series
Initially, Nilsen wanted to plead guilty to the charges against him, but when he appeared before Judge Croom-Johnson on October 24, 1983, he did not admit the truth of the accusations. The murderer’s defense attorney tried to reduce Nilsen’s sentence, citing his insanity. Des was examined by two psychiatrists, both of whom concluded that the accused suffered from a personality disorder.
Des’s story was adapted into a three-part crime series available on HBO Max. The main role in the drama was played by David Tennant (“Doctor Who”, “Good Omens”, “Broadchurch”). The production is based on the story of a real investigation.
