Before you go to the cinema to see Saw X We recommend watching the first film on HBO Max. Saw: The game of fear, available on that platform, as this new episode takes place immediately after the 2004 film in which the human identity of the antagonist, John Kramer (Tobin Bell), is revealed at the end.

In that same film – the favorite of many – we learn that Kramer suffers from an inoperable tumor that condemns him to death and that this diagnosis motivated him to subject certain chosen characters to terrible and terrifying tests, just to find out how willing they are to fight for their lives.

Saw X (already in theaters) reveals a never-before-discussed episode of Jigsaw in which he agreed to undergo surgery to remove the malignant tumor, but was misled by his doctors. Then his response will be revenge.

“This is the first time in many years that we have simply given the film a title Saw” said producer Mark Burg. “It’s not Jigsaw, it’s not Saw 3D, it’s just Saw. And we take the audience to the beginning of Saw and what they fell in love with.”

As revealed by the team behind the film, the script was seven years in the making to meet fans’ demand to see Kramer back at the center of the action and be the one to carry out every trap.

Yet there is an intriguing complexity to the character Saw X it’s noticable. As co-writer Josh Stolberg explains, “For the first time, we get to challenge John, with some other characters coming for him and calling him a murderer. It’s true that he hides behind his moral code, but John is the one who designs the traps. “So it made sense for John to do some soul searching in a way that we hadn’t seen before.”

Directed by Kevin Greutert, he confesses how intrigued he was by the opportunities offered by a story around John Kramer. “I was actually blown away when I realized how far we could take the character in this story,” he recalls. “Before that, I started to get the feeling that maybe Jigsaw had become some kind of guru or cult leader, moving away from the appeal of the early films. Sawwhen we saw John so clearly driven by anger at life’s injustices.

“In the previous stories he only had a fleeting and non-leading role,” Greutert continues. “Of Saw Xthere was an opportunity to reveal John as the true protagonist of the franchise and not just show an origin story or some other sign of his inventiveness, but rather take him on an emotional journey through his struggle with mortality.

Although the dark figure of the main character is retained, the director decided to take the risk of bringing the audience closer to his human side. “I was happy to be able to portray John as someone with human flaws and shortcomings. As with any franchise, Saw X It presented us with the dual challenge of maintaining the value of the original story and establishing that fame, but at the same time daring to present the story in a new and exciting way. “I also wanted to go back in time and have fun with the details of the saga, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t disappoint those who have loved these films for a long time.” (JO)
