Monet and Mark Rothko, the artists who inspire the designs of Resort, the recent collection of the Ecuadorian Sofía Baquerizo

Art is part of his life. He feeds on it, recreates it into fashion pieces and turns fabrics into various clothing items. Resort is the new collection presented by the Ecuadorian designer Sofia Baquerizo, who is also responsible for several outfits in the closet of María de Lourdes de Lasso, first lady of Ecuador. Inspired by the work of various artists, such as Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Mark Rothko (1903-1970), the creative returned to the country to present her line.

“We have made edited pieces. We have taken our inspiration from Monet, who is an impressionist artist who had a wonderful technique, and that is represented in the fabrics; and on the other hand, that he is a completely opposite, abstract artist of the 20th century: Mark Rothko. He is present in the collection and is reflected in the use of the cuts and contrasts of color and the abstract forms of the cuts of the garments. So, it is a combination between two opposite artists and two completely opposite periods ”, indicates Baquerizo.

In this collection, Baquerizo has opted for unique pieces, evening dresses, pants and shirts. “I try to make garments that are very versatile, that can be worn together, that can be combined. They are embroidered, some can be combined with a shirt or pants or crop tops. They are fabrics that can be combined, and the idea is that each of these pieces becomes the central one and can be used from a formal event to with jeans“, Explain.

“The collection began to be worked on five months ago, and I realized that today we had to change the product a bit, because before we only partied, but we started making shirts and some jeans, because we wanted to have a different piece that attracts a lot of attention. I realized that many asked me about this. That is why we have very varied pieces, because since the pandemic there are no longer as many events as before, and to make garments for all kinds of events ”, he details about the line that he presented in the BHome store (in Plaza Navona), owned by his uncle Juan Carlos Baquerizo.

In the Resort collection, another of the key pieces are the jeans made by Baquerizo. “We have made some jeans in cuts inspired by the 70s and that can be combined with some of our shirts, which are look oversize and that can be worn open or closed. The idea is to form many looks in one, ”he says.

Baquerizo emphasizes that all the pieces in this collection are made in Spain, where the designer has lived for eleven years. “All our fabrics are European; even one of the lace we have is from a French firm that is the same supplier of lace that Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge married (for her dress) ”, reveals.

Resort has more than one hundred pieces made of organza, organic cotton, transparencies, embroidery; the colors red, black, white, blue and fuchsia predominate. “Our centerpiece is a dress by tweed, and it is the same fabric from the supplier of the house Chanel. It has a few fringes, with golden edges. It is the star piece ”, he adds.

Street Style Line

Fofilicious is his most relaxed proposition. Designs that arose as a result of the pandemic and that, like the Resort, were created in Spain. “They are organic cotton and silk screen t-shirts, and they are made with my illustrations. It is a project that we have super beautiful, and it is about brightening the mood of people through illustration with funny messages that tell about things that happen today, such as COVID-19, and the idea is to have clothes that have different prices, “he says. According to the creative, this line is friendly to the environment; For this reason, limited, short-term capsule collections are presented and developed with prior order to avoid waste.

Baquerizo is also a graphic illustrator: the images and patterns seen on the shirts in this line are hers. “They were born in a moment of uncertainty. So I had the idea to make people happy with these designs and make them more affordable. Today’s collection came out a couple of weeks ago ”, he says. (I)
