Since the world premiere of “” at the Venice Festival, there has been a campaign against the director of the production. A number of shameful insults were directed at the film, which deals with the important but also difficult topic of the humanitarian crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border. People who have not even seen the latest work of the artist honored in Venice are commenting on the painting. There are scandalous comparisons to Nazi propaganda and accusations of an anti-Polish message.
We won’t see these shocking scenes in “The Green Border”.
The biggest accusation against Holland is the alleged “spitting on the uniform.” The Polish right and its supporters unanimously claim that the director presented viewers with an exaggerated and extremely biased image of what is actually happening at the border. Creators and reviewers assure us otherwise. Agnieszka Holland herself emphasized in interviews that she wanted to show a broad perspective of the problem. The film included not only the suffering of refugees, but also the sacrifice of Polish activists and the dilemmas of guards who often face a difficult choice between carrying out their assigned tasks and listening to their own moral compass.
Mikołaj Grynberg is a writer and photographer who spent a lot of time at the border, where he talked to both border guards and people who rushed to help migrants. The author has recently published a record of many of his conversations in the form of a book by Agora Publishing House with a title that says a lot about its content – “Jesus died in Poland.”
“Agnieszka Holland saved us a lot”
In an interview with the writer Przemek Gula, a journalist from Wirtualna Polska, to what extent Agnieszka Holland’s film actually exaggerates the events from our eastern border. “Agnieszka Holland saved us a lot,” Grynberg noted. The writer talked about the so-called “blackmailers” who willingly “hunt for refugees”.
What does the “blackmailer” do? “He blackmails by saying that he will spend it, unless he gets the money, then he will withdraw. Some time ago the price was PLN 400, but recently it has apparently increased,” explains the writer. The creator emphasizes that instead of the evil committed by Poles, Holland focused on those who help. He doesn’t understand how this attitude could be “anti-Polish”.
“Agnieszka Holland does not mention this. Her film is very nuanced. And above all: it is a film about good people, good Poles. About people who can put a lot on the line. I know stories of people who lost their jobs because of it. their relationships fell apart, they fell into deep mental crises. There is no such thing in “The Green Border”. But there is a very realistic picture of reality,” says Grynberg.
The author of the book “Jesus died in Poland” emphasizes that the attack on the director results from the fact that we are unable to come to terms with reality. “You have to have a lot of bad will to attack Agnieszka Holland after watching this film,” he concludes.
