Oscars 2024. It couldn’t be otherwise. “Peasants” is the Polish candidate for the Oscar!

“The Peasants” by DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman is the Polish candidate for the Oscar in the best international feature film category. The Oscar Commission appointed by the Director of the Polish Film Institute decided that this production would compete for a nomination for the statuette awarded by the American Film Academy.

in about half a year, but we have just met the Polish candidate for this unique statuette. The Polish Film Institute’s Oscar Committee decided to play a cautious, well-known card and put forward a strong candidate for the Oscar race: “” by DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman, which has been delighting viewers for several weeks with its unique approach to a well-known topic.

Oscars 2024. “Chłopi” is the Polish candidate for the Oscar

For some time now it has been said unofficially that there can only be one Polish official candidate for the Oscar – and it probably couldn’t be “The Green Border” by Agnieszka Holland. The committee appointed by the director of the Polish Film Institute, Radosław Śmigulski, decided on whether to enter the painting into the Oscar race, but its composition was approved by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, prof. Piotr Gliński.

The committee decided that Poland would be represented by the film “Peasants” by Dorota Kobiela-Welchman and Hugh Welchman – a unique, artistic film, more suitable for an art gallery than for a cinema. This is a very safe choice for Poland and a guarantee of an Oscar nomination (these will only be announced in January). The team responsible for the latest film adaptation of “The Peasants” has already received one Oscar nomination for “Loving Vincent” (in the Best Animated Feature Film category). Although it was not possible to win the statuette in 2018, anything is possible as long as the ball is in play.

Oscars 2024. The Polish candidate has a lot of competition

Choosing your own candidate, however, is only the first step in the fight not so much for the statuette, but first for an Oscar nomination. It is already known that almost 60 films from all over the world were submitted to the first part of this race. The conditions for participation in the “best international feature film” category are simple – the picture must be produced or co-produced by the cinematography of the represented country, and the second condition is the dialogue list – most of it must be in a language other than English (it does not have to be the official language of the country). . The film must also be released in American theaters for at least one week in the year before the Oscars.

Previous years have accustomed us to the fact that the candidates selected by the Polish Film Institute are unlikely to receive Oscar nominations from the American Film Academy. Notable exceptions: “Cold War” by Pawlikowski, “Corpus Christi” by Komasa, last year are just three films that have reached the nomination stage in the last ten years. The greatest pride in this category was brought by “Ida” by Paweł Pawlikowski, which in 2014 received the first – and so far only in this category – Oscar.
