Irati Iciar (Oñati, 1975) is today the new president of Euskaltzaleen Topagunea, taking over from Kike Amonarriz. The appointment was carried out at the extraordinary General Assembly held by the entity this afternoon in Ermua.
With a long history of promoting Basque, Iciar is president of the Geu de Vitoria-Gasteiz association and since 2019 has been part of the management of Topagunea. She has a degree in History, she is currently Coordinator of Continuing Education at the Basque Summer University.
In the video they released to announce the appointment, Iciar appeared “proud” and “excited”, without hiding the “vertigo” that being Amonarriz’s successor produces in her. “It is a very big responsibility,” she says, while thanking the trust they have placed in her. “I come to work,” she clarifies.
He is very clear about it. She is a “Gasteiztarra born in Oñati”, and she aims to provide Basque with “a peripheral vision” by highlighting the work carried out in this area both in Vitoria-Gasteiz and in the whole of Araba.
For his part, Amonarriz, after acknowledging that “different emotions” had accumulated today, explained that the handover was carried out “completely naturally.” “At Topagunea it is natural to change the direction from time to time. I would say that it is essential, because this implies the involvement of the different associations that make up our organization,” he assured.
In three months, Euskalgintzaren Kontseilua will hold its third congress, in which associations from all over the Basque Country will reflect on the challenges facing the Basque language. They will define the lines of work and objectives for the future.
