Euskaraz irakurri: Donostiako Zinemaldia, zinemaren ahalmenaren erakusleiho

Something does not work when the fundamental is overshadowed by its details, and, speaking of the Zinemaldia that begins today, cinema will once again prevail, along those lines, over all the extra-cinematic elements that threaten to erode the power of art.

At the San Sebastian meeting, cinema has shone in recent years over several dark events such as the coronavirus and the economic crises, and this year the glow of the screens will not fade for nine days, in 684 screenings, despite the fact that the strike by Hollywood actors and actresses will dampen the sparkle of the stars on the 120-meter red carpet.

Due to this strike, for example, the Spanish actor Javier Bardem will not be able to collect one of the three Donostia awards this year, and will have to do so during next year’s opening gala, as the director of Zinemaldia has explained. , José Luis Rebordinos. According to Rebordinos, the strike of actors and actresses has reduced the transfer of stars (three great American actors, one of them chosen to collect the Donostia award, have suspended their trip), but it has not affected the film programming.

The veteran animation master Hayao Miyazaki, another of the winners of the Donostia award, will also not be able to pick it up in person, due in his case to mobility problems, and it will be presented to him in Tokyo, within the opening gala, starting on at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, with the ETB and eitb.eus cameras as witnesses.

The third Donostia award, the first to be collected by a Basque filmmaker in the history of the festival, will go to Víctor Erice, who will receive it on Friday, September 29, before the screening of “Cerrar los ojos”, his first feature film in 30 years. .

Official Section

A total of sixteen films will compete for the Golden Shell and the rest of the awards in the main section of the festival, with the mission of winning over a jury chaired by Claire Denis, including two Basque films: the animated feature film by the San Sebastian director Isabel Herguera “The sultana’s dream” and “O corno”, signed by the San Sebastian native established in Galicia Jaione Camborda.

Basque cinema

Of course, in addition to the Official Section, there will be Basque films in other sections of Zinemaldia. In Zabaltegi-Tabakalera, which seeks new perspectives and forms, you can see two films by Basque directors: the short film “Contadores”, by Irati Gorostidi, and the medium-length film “Mamántula”, by Ion de Sosa from San Sebastian.

In addition, you can see, among others, “Bizkarsoro” and “Mirande”, by Josu Martinez; Fermin Muguruza’s documentary “Bidasoa 2018-2023”, “Mission to Mars”, the award-winning “Irati” and “20,000 species of bees” and “Arnasa betean” (Bertha Gaztelumendi and Rosa Zufia), a documentary that compiles testimonies from Basque filmmakers of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Fermin Muguruza will present the documentary “Bidasoa 2018-2023”

Precisely, this documentary will be screened on September 26, during the Basque Cinema Gala, after the actor Paco Sagarzazu collects the Zinemira award in honor of his entire career. In addition, also during the gala, EITB will present the EITB Saria: Egile Berriak award to Estibaliz Urresola for the echo of his film “20,000 species of bees”.

EITB will also hold its annual gala at Zinemaldia. It will be on September 27, and the series “Itxaso” will be screened for the first time.

On the other hand, for the first time, all the films in the Official Section will be seen with subtitles in Basque.

Beyond the strike in the US, Zinemaldia will allow us visits from stars such as Jessica Chastain, Claire Denis, Juliette Binoche, Mads Mikkelsen, Isabel Coixet, Michel Franco, Jonathan Glazer, Todd Haynes, Ladj Ly, Ana Torrent, Santiago Mitre, Emma Suárez, Sergi López…
