Both “The Green Border” and Agnieszka Holland herself were criticized and even hated even before the film’s premiere. The attacks intensified after the screening and award at the Venice Film Festival, and just before the Polish premiere, they were heavily involved in them, among others. Jarosław Kaczyński, as well as President Andrzej Duda.
Meanwhile, among others . Many Polish filmmakers also speak out in defense of freedom of speech and artistic expression. These included, among others: actor Andrzej Seweryn, director Olga Chajdas and Paulina Krajnik, present at the festival in Gdynia.
Why is there no “Green Border” in Gdynia?
In 2019, Holland’s “Citizen Jones” won the Golden Lion, but “The Green Border” is not in the main competition of the 48th Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia. But it’s not that he didn’t qualify – he wasn’t entered at all. The film’s distributor confirmed to us that the reason was simply lack of time – “The Green Border” was not completed by the deadline in which, according to the regulations, the producer could present it as a candidate (it expired on May 31). Just a few weeks ago, the president of Metro Films, Marcin Wierzchosławski, in an interview with “Gazeta Wyborcza”:
We completed the editing work on June 15, the day on which the deadline for submitting films to the competition at the Venice festival expired. We made it by the time we hit the tape [i zdobyli nagrodą specjalną jury – red.].
Creators with the inscription “Agnieszka Polland”
After Holland and her latest work were not included in the Gdynia event, but are on the lips of many, those who promote their films at the FPFF decided to react to the offensive criticism from some politicians and others. Seweryn wore a T-shirt with the inscription “Agnieszka Polland” to the screening of the film “Kos” directed by Paweł Maślony. The actor collaborated with Holland on the series “Ekipa”, directed by her with her daughter Kasia Adamik and Magdalena Łazarkiewicz. He played the president there.
In Gdynia, Olga Chajdas also wore a pattern by Matylda Damięcka. Holland’s collaborator (she was, among others, the second director of the Oscar-nominated “In Darkness”) and partner Adamik wore a T-shirt and a pin with a white and red flag and the inscription “Agnieszka Polland” at the promotional conference of her film “Imago”. At the conference dedicated to this production, casting director Paulina Krajnik also appeared in a T-shirt showing support for Holland, and producer Izabela Wójcik wore a pin.

“I once made up a cruel joke, too close to the truth to be just funny. I was asked abroad: – hi where are you from? -Poland -Holland? -ymm… yea Holland. now I will answer Polland :)” Damięcka wrote in a post in where she published her drawing.
