Although “The Green Border”, awarded at the Venice Film Festival, is only now hitting Polish cinemas, there has been a lot of buzz around the film for several weeks now. It’s all because of the anti-production campaign carried out by politicians of the ruling camp, which allegedly shows Poland in a bad light.
Agnieszka Holland says that before starting work on the film, she also talked to border guards
The so-called subordinated to the authorities also joined the attack. public media and national groups, which in recent days have organized two protests in front of cinemas where the film was shown as part of pre-premiere screenings.
In a recent interview for the website, Agnieszka Holland pointed out that all the events presented in the film are the results of conversations with refugees, volunteers and even border guards:
I must emphasize that what we see in the film regarding the activities of the Border Guard is also the result of reports that the guards themselves gave us, while maintaining anonymity, said the director.
The creator of “The Green Border” also points out that the refugee characters are played by “actors from Syria who also have refugee experience.” In the interview, he points out that this is a real picture of refugees compared to the one shown by the ruling camp:
Of course, the right wing prefers to show refugees as at the infamous conference of Minister KamiĆski – as zoophiles, pedophiles, etc. For me, it is like showing Jews in a negative light during the Holocaust,” says Agnieszka Holland.
The director is no longer waiting for an apology. Legal action has become a fact
The conversation also brought up the topic of politicians’ outrageous words towards the film, which have been in abundance lately. The most controversial comment was made by the Minister of Justice, Zbigniew Ziobro, who compared the director to a propagandist of the Third Reich. His statement was covered in international media, and Holland herself demanded an apology from him. Otherwise, she announced that she would go to court.
The director did not receive an apology and it turns out that the case is already underway. In a conversation with a person working at Noizz, she admitted that the first documents have already been submitted to the court, and other public figures who spoke scandalously about the director and the production will also be held accountable:
Yes, my lawyers are already preparing lawsuits regarding Zbigniew Ziobro’s entry, as well as the statements of other public figures who joined the minister in his rhetoric. Since the minister is not likely to stop his actions, but on the contrary, the matter is developing and new elements are constantly being added. The first documents in this case have already been submitted to the court – summed up the creator of ‘The Green Border’.
