Her first husband cheated on her with Karol’s sister. Later, the future king became her son’s godfather

Camilla Parker Bowles was the “other woman” in the marriage of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer and played a key role in the couple’s breakup. For many years she lived in the shadow. After all, she went from being a former scandalist to becoming one of the most respected ladies in the world.

Camilla, queen consort of King Charles III, was born on July 17, 1947 in London. She came from a wealthy family and grew up on a country estate in Plumpton, Sussex. Her father, Major Bruce Shand, was Vice-Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex, and her mother, Rosalind, came from the aristocratic and wealthy Cubitt family. Her father’s rank meant that Camilla and her family lived in a somewhat regal manner and socialized with the British high society. She attended Queen’s Gate School for Girls in South Kensington. There she earned the nickname “Milla” and was famous for bragging about the fact that her great-grandmother, Alice Keppel, was the mistress of King Edward VII. It was this fact that she was supposed to inform Karol about when they first met.

Camilla Parker-Bowles’ first marriage. Prince Charles became godfather to her son Tom

After attending schools in Switzerland and France, Camilla returned to London to work for a short time as a receptionist for a Mayfair-based decorating company. It was around this time, in 1965, at the age of 17, that she first met Andrew Parker Bowles, an officer in the Royal Horse Guards, at a debutante party. They dated on and off for seven years, during which Andrew was allegedly involved with a number of other women, including Princess Anne. In the summer of 1971, at a polo match, 24-year-old Camilla first met Prince Charles, who was 22 at the time. They hit it off immediately and over the next 18 months their friendship blossomed into a romance. Karol, as Marlene Koenig writes in an article for, realized one thing:

He knew his parents would not accept this relationship.

Camilla, although wealthy, was not aristocratic enough and had what Prince Charles’ godmother, Patricia, described as “history”. So Prince Charles prepared to join HMS Minerva in mid-January 1973 for a seven-month Caribbean cruise, refraining from expressing the depth of his feelings for Camilla. Two months later, in March 1973, Camilla became engaged to Andrew Parker Bowles. The couple then married on July 4, 1973. A year later, their first child, Tomas Henry, was born, and less than four years later, another one, Laura Rose. Interestingly, Prince Charles became the godfather of her son. The marriage of Andrew Parker Bowles and Camilla Parker Bowles was a very stormy one, with many quarrels and numerous betrayals.

When did Charles and Camilla start their extramarital relationship? They were both experiencing a crisis in their marriages

During the first years of Camilla’s marriage to Andrew, her relationship with Prince Charles remained platonic. Camilla remained Charles’ close friend and confidant throughout the 1980s. They were seen going to the theater together and at many of the same parties, but the prince insisted years later that he had been faithful to Diana until their marriage “irretrievably broke down.” Camilla and Karoli renewed their romance in 1986 when his marriage was beyond repair. It was five years after he and Diana married. According to reports, the affair continued and in the summer of 1994, Charles’s interview with Jonathan Dimbleby was broadcast on television, in which Charles admitted his infidelity and both his lack of sympathy for Diana and his disturbing distance from his family. The following year, Camilla and Andrew announced their divorce. As quoted in the issued statement, they wrote:

Throughout our marriage, we have always had rather different interests, but in recent years we have led completely separate lives.

A few months later, in November 1995, Princess Diana gave her famous Panorama interview with Martin Bashir, in which she is quoted as saying to viewers that “there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.” Within weeks of the conversation, she suggested that the couple should divorce, and quickly. Charles’s marriage to Diana was dissolved in August 1996, after four years of separation. Camilla became the most hated woman in Britain, being blamed for the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage.

Over the years, Camilla’s relationship with King Charles III gained public acceptance. On April 9, 2005, they married in a civil ceremony in Windsor, and she was given the title “Duchess of Cornwall”. Since then, the couple has become more public, with Camilla often helping her husband with his royal duties. She accompanied her husband on many journeys, including: during the royal visit to the United States in 2005. She also supports his charity work and engages in her own social work. She is a patron of the National Osteoporosis Society and a trustee of the Wiltshire Bobby Van Trust. Initially, she was to become princess consort upon Charles’s accession to the British throne, but her husband decided to appoint her as queen consort when he became king after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
