Meanwhile, somewhat aside from the official events, in New Zealand, WETA Workshop and Private Division were working together like ants on a completely new title related to “”.
On Friday, the first short trailer of “Tales of the Shire” was shown – a game set in Middle-earth, about which the only thing known for now is that it will concern hobbits.
“Tales of the Shire” – a new approach to Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings”?
There have been a lot of games in Middle-earth. The biggest ones – both parts of “Shadow of Mordor” – were warmly received by fans despite a very casual approach to the original book (Shelob as a woman? And who has seen that?!). The MMO “Lord of the Rings Online” is also enjoying constant interest, and after more than 16 years after its premiere, it will soon see another expansion. A gamified version of Gollum’s story has recently appeared, and in a month you will be able to go to Moria and rebuild Khazad-dum together with the dwarves. All these titles are focused on combat and competition – either with computer-controlled opponents or with other players. WETA Workshop and Private Division seem to be going against this approach.
Little is known about “Tales of the Shire” yet, but there are many indications that there will be plenty of fighting and competition. The game was described in one sentence:

Perhaps it will be a combination of “The Sims” and “Animal Planet”, or a charming point-and-click game in which we will be able to walk around the Shire and perform small tasks given to us by Hobbits. WETA Workshop has so far been responsible for brilliant special effects for various films (e.g. “Avatar”, “King Kong”, all films based on Tolkien’s prose) and there is no doubt that they will deliver something exceptionally beautiful and creative.
However, we have to wait for more details – apart from the title and the description sentence, we know absolutely nothing. The trailer shows names that every Shire fan knows – Bywater, the pointer to the Ivy Bush inn, the hill where Bilbo lived – and that’s it. And finally, the enigmatic release date – 2024. Fortunately, this one is fast approaching, so who knows, maybe we will receive more information before the new year?
