Insults against the painting and its creators abound on the Internet. Even President Andrzej Duda said scandalous words about the film, comparing the work to Nazi propaganda. No wonder the director admitted in an interview with o2.pl that she does not feel safe in Poland.

Comments are not everything. The hate towards Holland’s latest production and its creators also spread to the streets. Protests took place before the premiere screenings of “The Green Border” in Krakow and Warsaw. People who had not even seen the film came to the demonstrations. Similarly to Błażej Poboży, Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration, who announced the day before the premiere that the Ministry of Interior and Administration wanted to precede the screenings of “The Green Border” in arthouse cinemas with a special spot.

The situation in Poland is so loud and absurd (“A real, brutal war is taking place abroad, people are dying. And our government has been dealing with the film for several days. It’s really happening,” writes Agata Szczęśniak from TokFM) that it has already reached foreign media. They began to write about the government’s campaign against the Polish film awarded in Venice. “Disgusting and dangerous attacks during preparations for the Polish premiere of ‘The Green Border'” – reads the headline on Variety. Deadline, in turn, reports that Agnieszka Holland, fearing for her safety, organized 24-hour security for the Polish premiere. The text stated that there is an “online hate campaign” against the creator in our country. “It only takes one mad person for things to take a serious turn,” says Holland in an interview with the American website.

The director explained in the interview that the perspectives in “The Green Border” are different. “In the film we see one or two sadistic behaviors. The rest of the characters are ordinary people trapped in a moral abyss. I also showed wonderful Poles who save people’s lives regardless of their skin color. I showed the risks they take,” says Holland. At the same time, he emphasizes that the reaction of Polish politicians is a desire to hide their guilt. “They also want to use this situation for electoral purposes,” Holland emphasizes.

The Hollywood Reporter website informed readers about the decision of the American Film Directors Guild to support Agnieszka Holland. The creators do not agree to comparing “The Green Border” to Nazi propaganda. The directors stated that they condemned the attacks on the director and emphasized her key role in stimulating viewers’ discussion and raising important social issues in their films.
