Almost everyone with a phone is exposed to possible social engineering fraud carried out over the phone – all it takes is a moment of inattention to fall into an ambush. Even though the police appeal for caution, there are still situations in which fraudsters manage to manipulate the victim and extort money from him.
The 60-year-old answered the phone. He later regretted it bitterly
The police pay particular attention to calls from people who pretend to be a “financial advisor” and offer a relatively easy way to increase their savings; most often by investing in cryptocurrencies. The announcement on the police website describes the case of a 60-year-old man from Lublin who, via one of these types of telephones, he lost as much as PLN 111,000 from his bank account.
The “consultant” assured that the invested funds could be multiplied
As we read in the police report, the 60-year-old man followed the instructions of his “consultant”, tempted by the promise of quick savings on the stock market. According to the 60-year-old’s account, his interlocutor suggested that he open an investment account. The man agreed and then deposited small amounts into the account. After some time, the “consultant” called him regularly – until the 60-year-old wanted to end the investing process and withdraw the funds allegedly accumulated in the account. Then by telephone the fraudster asked him to send a scan of his ID card and installing a remote desktop program on your phone and computer. As if that was not enough, the man also allegedly changed the method of access to his bank account to authorization via SMS.
He lost over PLN 100,000
When the 60-year-old from Lublin obediently performed a number of activities that the “consultant” instructed him to do over the phone, he lost the ability to use his account. He immediately contacted his bank. It quickly turned out that nearly PLN 111,000 was withdrawn from his account. So the 60-year-old man went to the nearest police station and reported the fraud committed against him.
